13&9 Design and Fractals Research
Renaturation Collection In the presence of nature, we are more present.
Rooted in the timeless language of nature, the Renaturation Collection harnesses the power of natural fractals—patterns that have surrounded and sustained us since the beginning of our time. These forms are embedded in our perception, second nature to us: seen without looking, felt before knowing. Moss carpeting the earth, trees reaching skyward, rivers weaving through the landscape—each offers subconscious cues to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect. The Renaturation Collection invites you to opt out of stress, immerse yourself in calm, and thrive as we are meant to—in harmony with nature itself.

A collaboration with 13&9 Design and Fractals Research
With a holistic approach that balances human well-being and environmental responsibility, Anastasija and Martin Lesjak of 13&9 Design believe the built environment should enhance how we feel and function. Together, through their ongoing collaboration with Dr. Richard Taylor of the University of Oregon and Fractals Research, the collaborative team explore the next evolution of biophilia—one rooted in science and designed for wellness, applying a fractal-based approach to biophilic design. The Renaturation Collection for Momentum furthers this shared mission, using the power of natural-based fractals in their first wallcovering collection. The result: patterns scientifically proven to reduce stress, enhance creativity, and bring the restorative qualities of nature indoors.
Renaturation Collection
Imagine a space that instantly calms and centers you—a place that feels deeply restorative, as if nature itself is breathing with you. This is the profound impact of the Renaturation Collection. Fractal River, Fractal Moss, and Fractal Bark translate the intricate beauty of natural fractals into a uniquely tactile experience. With a D-value (fractal dimension) within the 1.7–1.74 range, the collection is calibrated to deliver the greatest benefit to the broadest population— including those who are neurodivergent. Through thoughtfully designed patterns and a richly complementary color palette, the collection captures the regenerative spirit of rewilded landscapes, offering an intuitive connection to nature that is both deeply felt and visually compelling.

FINGERPRINT OF NATURE
Research shows that exposure to mid-D fractals reduces the body’s stress levels by
60%
Fractals are repeating patterns found throughout nature at different scales—think trees, mountains, rivers, clouds. Research shows that humans instinctively recognize these patterns and benefit from their calming effects. In fact, 600 million years of evolution have given us an innate, immediate fractal fluency.

Fractal Dimension measures the visual complexity of a fractal pattern—the higher the D-value, the denser and more detailed the pattern. The Renaturation Collection is intentionally crafted within the ideal fractal range of 1.70 -1.74, shown to produce the greatest calming effect and health benefits across the widest range of people.
For over millions of years, humans visually processed fractals effortlessly and instinctually. The benefits of which are undeniable, from lowering stress to improving overall health. Yet today we are often disconnected from the ‘fractal bathing’ our ancestors experienced daily. Integrating fractal patterns into the built environment restores those effects and people thrive.
Fractal River Renaturation Collection
The genesis of the collection, Fractal River is inspired by the River Aire in Geneva, which had been canalized into a straight line for over a century. In 2001, the river was “set free” and began to renaturate, gradually returning to its natural form. Fractal River captures that wild, meandering flow through the power of fractal patterns—symbolizing the ability of all elements to return to their purest, most organic state.

Fractal Moss Renaturation Collection
Passing an old stone wall in Graz nearly every day, Martin Lesjak became captivated by the moss and lichen overtaking its surface—not just for their untamed beauty and sense of renaturation, but for the incredibly intricate fractal patterns within. Documenting the wall’s changes over time became the foundation for this stunning yet comforting mural design.

Fractal Bark Renaturation Collection
Seeking to recreate the calm of standing in a forest, surrounded by towering trees, the 13&9 team embedded a fractal bark motif into a composition of vertical columns. The result is a hand- drawn, repeating design that, when viewed from a distance, reads more as a natural vertical stripe than an all-over pattern. Larger central shapes gradually taper toward the edges of each column, creating a sense of both rounded form and layered depth—reminiscent of the trunk of a tree.

“My twenty five years of experiments have led to the ‘fractal fluency’ model, which declares that human vision has become fluent in the visual language of nature’s fractals and can process their features efficiently, creating an aesthetic experience accompanied by a decrease in the observer’s physiological stress-levels.” Dr. Richard Taylor
Q | What is a Fractal?
Q | What are the benefits of fractal-based designs?
A | Fractals are intricate patterns found in nature that repeat at different scales. They are the building blocks of many natural forms—like trees, clouds, coastlines, and even broccoli—where smaller parts resemble the whole. Q | What is the origin of our visual connection to fractals, and how do they benefit us today? A | For millions of years, early humans were surrounded by natural patterns—trees, rivers, clouds, and mountains—now known as fractals. These self-repeating forms signaled familiar, life-sustaining environments. Over time, our visual systems evolved to process them effortlessly, a trait known as fractal fluency. This deep familiarity may have helped early humans feel safe, calm, and focused—conserving energy and reducing stress. Today, that instinct remains. Neuroaesthetic research shows that simply viewing fractals can ease mental fatigue and reduce physiological stress by up to 60%, even in just seconds. Q | What is “Fractal Fluency?” A | Fractal fluency is our brain’s natural ability to quickly recognize and process fractal patterns. Our eyes process these patterns effortlessly, in fact our visual system is wired for these patterns, seeing them boost focus, pattern recognition, and memory—especially when the fractals are of medium complexity. Q | What does D-Value mean? A | Fractal dimension, or D-value, measures how visually complex a fractal pattern is. A simple line has a D-value of 1, and a fully filled shape has a D-value of 2. Fractals fall between these values—the more detailed and intricate the pattern, the closer the D-value is to 2. The Renaturation Collection has values between 1.7-1.74, an optimal range shown to deliver the greatest wellness benefits to the broadest population, including those who may be neurodiverse or more sensitive to environmental stimuli.
A | Research shows that fractal-based patterns can reduce stress by up to 60% with less than a minute of exposure—even when viewed peripherally. These patterns positively influence brain health, promote healing, and enhance overall well-being. They also support cognitive function, including focus, pattern recognition, and memory, with measurable benefits observed across all ages—even in infants as young as 10 months. Fractal-based designs offer a powerful tool for creating environments that not only feel better, but also help people perform and recover better.
Q | What is the connection between biophilia and fractals?
A | Fractal-based designs—developed and tested by 13&9 and Fractals Research—provide scientific validation for the well-documented benefits of biophilic design. They help answer the core question: What is it about nature that triggers these remarkable effects? The answer is fractals. Q | Why should fractals matter and why integrate them into the built environment? A | While our ancestors benefited daily from ‘fractal bathing’ in nature, today we are disconnected from those benefits, spending 90% of our time indoors often looking at screens. Fractal-based designs reconnect the built environment to nature and reintroduce the calming, and cognitive benefits of natural fractals to its occupants. The result is a healthier, more inclusive environment that supports mental clarity, balance and overall wellness. Q | What does renaturation mean (the name of the collection)? A | Renaturation refers to the process of nature reclaiming man-made or developed spaces—a concept rooted in ecological restoration. In the context of the collection, it symbolizes bringing the benefits of nature back into the built environment by integrating natural patterns that promote well-being, calm, and connection. Uniting biophilic design, art and science, Renaturation reimagines place as a state of wellbeing, reconnecting the built environment to the rhythms of nature and offering subconscious cues to thrive as we are meant to – in harmony with nature itself.
