The Minister’s Week-Day Challenge B y E dwin H. B yington Dr. Byington has had years of exper ience as a pastor and has spent other val uable years in the training of preachers. He therefore writes with the assurance of an expert, yet with the kindliness of a sympathetic teacher and fellow labor er. The young preacher’s weaknesses and temptations are laid bare with the skill of a surgeon. Mttst helpful sug gestions are offered, covering almost every conceivable problem that is likely to arise in a church or community. The book will not and is not intended to make the min ister independent of the divinely appointed means of receiving supernaturally grace and guidance by the Holy Spirit through the Word, but it will warn of many pos sible pitfalls. In these days of almost in finite variety of church methods, Dr. By- ington’s views may not appeal to every preacher, nor will his methods fit every case; nevertheless, this'volume is worth possessing and studying. 230 pages. Richard R. Smith, Inc. Doth. Price $2.00. — o — Calvin and Calvinism B y B enjamin B. W arfield This is the fifth ill the projected series of ten volumes of selected writings of the late Dr. Benjamin B. Warfield. It con sists of a group of studies in the life and work of Calvin, which originally appear ed in the Presbyterian Theological Re view and other periodicals. It begins with a chapter on the man and his work. Four essays, on Calvin’s doctrine of the knowl edge of God, of God, of the Trinity, and of the creation, form the body of the book. No theologian of recent times has been better fitted than Dr. Warfield to give a scholarly and sympathetic yet un prejudiced estimate of the great reformer and his work. It is well that these stud ies are preserved for the benefit of those who will desire to know Calvinism as it is understood and interpreted by a rec ognized authority. 428 pages. Oxford University Press. Cloth. Price .$3.00. 1 — o — The fact that this book won the $2,000 first prize in a contest conducted under the direction of the American Sunday School Union is a sufficient guarantee of its interesting style and wholesome mes sage. The story gathers around a mid- western college, known for both its loyal ty to orthodox Christianity and its high scholarship, of which the author is an alumnus. Mr. Ingles has succeeded in depicting accurately college life as he has seen it, and the appeal of his story char acters—earnest, fun-loving, typically mod ern young people—is irresistible. His is a prize story that will be prized by all who read it, because it strengthens faith. 359 pages. Union Press. Cloth. Price $ 1 . 00 . — o — The Simplicity of the Spirit- Filled Life B y L. L. before the final judgment of God upon the Antichrist. In his exposition of the Rev elation, he takes the futurist position. The notes are brief, but clear and sug gestive. Dr. Erdman’s loyal defense of the truth, his broad learning, and _his deep love for his Lord were recognized by all who knew him. Therefore his views on the Revelation must command the respect of even those who feel free to differ with him in some of his inter-' pretations, as the present reviewer does. 102 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.25. — o — The Rugged Road B y M argaret E. S angster The three fascinating stories that com prise this book deal with experiences that might have happened to certain characters who lived in the days of Christ’s earthly ministry. To attempt to weave imagina tive material into the fabric of the gos pel narrative is always dangerous. Miss Sangster seems, however, to have ap proached her task with thoughtful rever ence for the Word of God, coupled with her usual marked ability to make oriental scenes vivid and challenging. The stories were originally published as magazine articles. 95 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.25, — o — The deepening of spiritual life is ur gently needed in individual Christians and in the churches of today. This volume deals with the subject in a forceful and yet appealing manner. There are^ three main divisions: “Faith,” “Hope, and “Charity.” For inspiration and encour agement, the book will be valuable to all Christians. Marshall, Morgan & Scott, Ltd. Cloth. Price $1.75. — o — This fascinating romance of' African life will appeal to a wide, circle of read ers. The book is entirely true to Chris tianity, but it is not primarily religious. It is, rather, a vivid—and seemingly very accurate—description of the environment and customs of a warlike and primitive tribe, showing the influence that has been brought to bear upon them by both Chris tian and non-Christian white men. Char acteristic of their race, the men and wo men of the story appear “singularly pa tient and forgiving, very delicately sensi tive in matters of courtesy, acutely logi cal, warmly sociable, humorous, and kindly.” Whoever reads the book will have a new appreciation of the African and a new understanding of his problems, which, after all, are the problems of men everywhere. 291 pages. For years he was leader of the Niagara Bible Conference. For a time, he was associated with D. L. Moody in Chicago. He was a firm believer in the second coming of Christ, from the premillenarian point of view. However, he did not hold to what has been called the “any moment” theory. Rather, he expected the rapture of the church to take place during a time of tribulation, but
