and temptation will reveal the closeness and blessedness of the tie. It will give Him opportunity to gain numberless.vic tories. It will be an instrument He uses to impart more maturity to my faith, more courage, more patience, more trust. All the days He is with me, to the end, and through the end, and beyond the end for ever and ever. Whether I live or wheth er I die, I am His, and He is mine. —Alexander Stnellie. What a marvelous exhibition of grace is given in this short phrase ! It takes us behind the scene in Pilate’s hall, behind the jeering crowd that passed by Calvary’s hill, to the hand of God and to the cause of the stroke. Our manifold transgres sions needed to be brought together as in one mass ; and that we might escape our doom, as the consequence of such breach es of the divine law, a stroke must fall on the Surety who took the place of the guilty. That stroke fell. O Christ, it fell on Thee, Thou wast sore stricken of Thy God, There’s not'one stroke for me; Thy tears, Thy blood, beneath it flowed, Thy bruising healeth me. —Henry Payne. That is the word for all Christ’s ser vants. That is the motto of true conse cration at all times and in all places. Ev ery word in this sentence is emphatic and intense in its meaning. We may not choose some of His commands for obe dience, and some for neglect, inattention, or rejection. We are not to do the pleas ant things He bids us to do and leave un done the things that are not according to our own taste or feeling. We are to do even the things that cost pain and personal sacrifice. It was thus that Jesus Himself did the will of His Father. That will took Him to the cross; but He did not shrink from accepting it when He saw the way growing dark before Him, or when He felt the thorns under His feet and the bur dens increasing into crushing weight upon His shoulders. If we would walk in His steps, our obedience must be complete. “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it." It is the doing that is important. — J. R. Miller. — o — June 6—“ Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Lk. 4:4). When my Lord Christ first became a living and unutterable reality to me, I remembered that one of my first sensa tions of profound relief was this: He ab solutely trusted the Bible ; and though there are things in it inexplicable that have puzzled me much, I am going, not in a blind sense, but reverently to trust the Book because of Him. “To doubt would be disloyalty, To falter would be sin.” , '—Handley G. C. Moule. June 4— “For the transgression of. my people was he stricken” (Isa. 53:8). . June 5— “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5).

hearts in vain! The tears of the Lord at this time are all the more wonderful as we contemplate the fact that He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead and restore him to the sisters and thrill their hearts with an unexpected joy. Not for them alone, therefore, were those tears shed. They were shed to assure our hearts that He sees and under stands. “Our fellow Sufferer yet retains A fellow feeling of our pains; And still remembers in the skies His tears, His agonies, and cries. “In every pang that rends the heart, The Man of Sorrows had a part; He sympathizes with our grief, And to the sufferer sends relief.” — L. W. G. Alexander. Sheep are liable to many diseases; many of them are weak and feeble; these a good shepherd taketh pity of, and en deavors to heal and strengthen. So the saints of God are subject to manifold weaknesses, temptations, and afflictions which move the Almighty to great com passion, and sorely to rebuke the shep herds of Israel for their cruelty and great remissness toward His flock: “The dis eased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick.” Therefore He saith He would Himself take the work into His own hands. “I will strengthen that which was sick.” —Benjamin Reach. Upon working days, rejoice in the Lord who giveth thee strength to labor and feedeth thee with the labor of thy hands. On holidays, rejoice in the Lord who feasteth thee with the marrow and fat ness of His house. In plenty, rejoice ’again and again because the Lord giveth; in want, rejoice because the Lord taketh away, and as it pleaseth the Lord, so come all things to pass. }juH^Edward Marbury. You have heard of stereotype printing. When the types áre set up, they are cast —made a fixed thing—so that from one plate you can strike off hundreds of thou sands of pages in succession without the trouble of setting up the types again. Paul says, “That I might be a plate never worn out—never destroyed—from which proof impressions may be taken to the very end of time.” What a splendid thought, that the apostle Paul, having por trayed himself as the chief of sinners, then portrays himself as having received forgiveness for a grand and specific end, that he_ might be a standing plate from which impressions might be taken for ever, that no man might despair who had read his biography. — J. Elder Cumming. June 8— “I . . . veill bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick" (Zech. 34:16). June 9— “My soul shall be joyful in the Lord” (Psa. 35:9). June 10— “A pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting” (1 Tim. 1:16).
