What Christmas

Should Mean To The Jew

O ne of the saddest and most curious of all spectacles in the religious realm is to witness the Christian (and the professing Chris­ tian also) rejoicing in and celebrat­ ing the birth of the Jewish Messiah and King into the world, but the Jews themselves going on indiffer­ ently, and taking no part in recog­ nizing the birth of the Jewish Son of David. Multitudes in practically all nations of the earth make much of this season and rejoice in its message, but Israel barely takes note of it. But Christmas, the birth of the Messiah, should mean to the Jew the world over, first, The Fulfillment of All His Hopes and Promises. 18

To Israel had come the Messi­ anic promises. In Romans 9:4 we read of the “ Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises.” The promises re­ ferred to are specifically the Messi­ anic promises. These were various and were handed down from cen­ tury to century. The woman’s seed: Genesis 3:15: “ I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Shiloh: Genesis 40:10: “ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff (or lawgiver) from be­ tween his feet, Until Shiloh come;
