RULES AND REGULATIONS
Saying “I do” in the British Virgin Islands is as easy as falling in love! Whether you’re planning a barefoot beach ceremony or a grand island celebration, the BVI makes it simple, seamless, and unforgettable. You can start your Marriage Licence application online at www.crisvi.gov.vg by following the easy step-by-step instructions, or apply in person at the Registrar-General’s Office, located in the Burhym Building, Road Town, Tortola. There’s no waiting period to get married in the BVI, and once your documents are ready, your licence can often be processed the very same day. The Registrar-General’s Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Couples may apply for either of the following licences: • Special Licence: Perfect for visitors—this allows you to marry within one day of arrival in the Territory. • Ordinary Licence: Ideal for residents or long-stay visitors—this requires at least 15 days of residence before applying. After your ceremony, your official marriage certificate is usually ready within one to three business days, leaving you free to relax, celebrate, and enjoy newlywed life in paradise.
At the Registrar-General’s Office you will be required to:
• Present a US$220 postage stamp (purchased at the Registrar-General’s Office or Post Office) for a Special Licence. To qualify for this Special Licence, you must be present at the time of application and either already be resident or present in the Territory for at least one day. • Present a US$120 postage stamp (also available from the Registrar-General’s Office or Post Office) for an Ordinary Licence, if you have been resident in the Territory for 15 days or more.
• Provide proof of marital status — for example, certified copies of your Decree(s) Absolute if divorced, or Death Certificate(s) if widowed. • Have two persons witness and sign your licence application. These witnesses do not need to be the same as those who attend your marriage ceremony. If you do not have witnesses traveling with you, you can request persons in the Virgin Islands to act as witnesses both at the Registrar-General’s Office and at your ceremony.
• Show proof of your identity (e.g., your passport) and your date of arrival/residency status in the British Virgin Islands.
Fees are subject to change; please verify with the Registrar- General’s Office before applying.
