OCTOBER 2025

NOW, I CAN’T IMAGINE LEAVING I DIDN’T WANT TO MOVE HERE

When I first learned that I was going to have to move to Kentucky, I wasn’t excited. I vividly remember my ex-husband stating that the only good thing about Kentucky was seeing it in your rearview mirror and knowing you don’t have to turn around. I know others have felt the same way before visiting or moving here. The Louisville area, in particular, is where many people get transferred to from out of state. They worry that there won’t be anything to do or that Kentucky will be boring. Once they arrive and get settled in, their opinion quickly changes. That’s what happened to me! When it came time to decide if I wanted to stay or go, I opted to stay. Many years later, it’s safe to say that I don’t regret my decision in the slightest! Kentucky is one of the most beautiful states in the country, but it rarely gets the credit it deserves. This month, we get a special opportunity to show appreciation for the state we call home when we recognize National Kentucky Day on Oct. 19. Now, this might sound like another one of those arbitrary holidays, but it actually signifies the day Kentucky became a state. In honor of the occasion, I’d love to share a few things that helped me fall further in love with the Bluegrass State! Southern Hospitality People often say everyone is just nicer in southern states, and this is on full display in Kentucky. When I first moved here, I went grocery shopping in my St. Louis Rams sweatshirt. While in the egg aisle,

a lady stopped me to strike up a conversation. Forty-five minutes later, I had her name, phone number, and address. She told me to stop by or call her whenever I needed advice about where to go or things to do around town. You wouldn’t get that experience anywhere else in the country! Whenever you meet someone from Kentucky, the first thing they do is try to establish common ground with you. They want to find out what you have in common so they can expand the conversation and establish a bond. This might sound like a basic thing, but you don’t see it very often elsewhere. The only downside is that people will start these conversations wherever and whenever. It’s great when you can give a simple greeting, but some people will tell their whole life story while in line at the grocery store! However, we should remember that it could be the only social interaction that person gets! Unique Locations and Beautiful Sights Kentucky has some incredible lakes, national parks, and awe-inspiring locations worth visiting. You’ll never forget the first time you saw a moonbow at Cumberland Falls or explored the longest cave system in the world at Mammoth Cave. If you want to add some history to the mix, you’ll love visiting the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park or Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. Want to surround yourself with nature? You can do so easily by traveling to Cumberland Gap, Daniel

Boone National Forest, Red River Gorge, or the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

You can’t talk about the beauty of Kentucky without mentioning horses! There are countless riding stables and horse farms within driving distance. If you’ve never driven by or visited the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington, add it to your must-see list. Those who want to get an inside look into horse racing and the Derby will want to see the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs. However, if you want to come face-to-face with some past Derby or Preakness winners, take a trip to Georgetown and go on a tour at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farm. I could go on and on about what makes Kentucky amazing, but I’m sure you have some thoughts about it yourself. If you have any must-see recommendations within the Bluegrass State, I’d love to hear about them!

Music, Lounges, and Midair Dancing

THE RISE OF PARTY PLANES

The 1970s were the golden age of commercial flying, and airlines went all out to make traveling by plane more than just getting from one place to another — they tried to dazzle passengers along the way. With the release of Boeing’s 747, airlines had more space to work with, so some chose to turn air travel into something closer to a night out.

Passengers danced to 8-track tunes beside mirrored walls. You could hit the dance floor even at 35,000 feet.

They weren’t the only ones, either. United Airlines turned its upper deck into the “Friendship Room,” while Qantas called theirs the “Captain Cook Lounge.” Singapore Airlines had the “Raffles Lounge,” which came equipped with slumberettes for anyone looking to lie down after an in-flight drink or two. And American Airlines even had a piano in the back of the plane. It wasn’t exactly a grand piano — more of a sturdy Wurlitzer organ — but it gave fliers something to gather around. The goal of these airlines was to create a glamorous experience for passengers. But the good times didn’t last long. By the early 1980s, most airlines had traded disco lights for passenger capacity, and the lounges and passenger bars faded out. People were flying more than ever, but the party plane era quietly ended.

Air Canada was all in on the trend. On transatlantic flights between Toronto and Europe, the upper deck of their 747 became a full-on disco.

The Apps You Haven’t Heard Of (But Should Be Using) Still, it’s fun to look back on this period of air travel when the additional space in bigger planes meant bars, lounges, and music. For a little while, at least, flying came with cocktails, conversation, and maybe even a chance to dance down the aisle. Smart Saving Starts Here

Life has become increasingly expensive in recent years. Between the cost of groceries, utilities, housing, vehicle upkeep and insurance, and the other surprising purchases that pop up weekly, many of us don’t have any money left over after paying for the necessities. Some of us may not even have

A TALE OF HUMANITY

AMID TRAGEDY ‘THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN’ BY JIM DEFEDE

If you were alive on Sept. 11, 2001, you likely know precisely what you were doing on that fateful day. It likely started the same as any other day. You woke up early, got ready for school or work, and headed out the door to start your day. Before long, your workplace or school got quiet as

everyone turned their attention to the TV, trying to determine if we were under attack. As the hours passed and the situation became

more dire, people headed home to spend time with their loved ones, unsure what would happen next.

Lentil and Sweet Potato Stew

For many of us, those images and feelings are cemented into our memory. You may have even supplemented your knowledge by

watching every documentary or reading new information about the events. While most of our attention was on New York City, have you ever wondered what happened to the planes in the air that had to be immediately grounded?

What about those traveling into the country from overseas? “The Day the World Came to Town” by Jim DeFede is an excellent book that answers this question.

This delicious dish will keep your family warm, full, and happy as the weather cools down.

Every day, thousands of people come into the country on airlines, but when 9/11 occurred and planes weren’t allowed into the country, where did these people go? Many ended up in Gander, Newfoundland, a city of 6,000 people north of the border. This city had an unused military airport with long runways, which made it the perfect place for international travelers to wait out the situation. Thirty-seven planes landed at that airport during 9/11, and the residents had to band together to house, feed, and care for these individuals, most of whom didn’t have any clothing because the airlines would not let them collect their luggage from the aircraft. This feel-good book shows that the best of humanity can come out during the worst possible situations. It’s not all happy, as you might expect from a story about such an unprecedented time in our country’s history, but it’s well worth the read. And if you don’t enjoy reading, there is a musical that tells their story called “Come From Away.” You can find the Broadway version of the show streaming on Apple TV+.

A DARING KITTY GPS TEST 4

MISSION IM-PAW-SIBLE No one likes going to the doctor, but for one Florida feline, a routine visit to the vet turned into a daring escape. Just after being neutered at SPCA Florida, George the cat put his kitty GPS to the test when he broke out of his cage, trying to make his way home. As if his daring getaway wasn’t impressive enough, the tabby scampered across 3 miles full of obstacles to return to his owners’ doorstep. Owner Bob Beasock was heartbroken by the news and searched for his little buddy alongside clinic staff for nearly a week. Just when it looked like they might never find his furry companion, Bob found him at home, curled up in his favorite armchair in the carport. Cats are skilled navigators who use a combination of scent, visual markers, and even geomagnetism to find their way around. But George’s journey wasn’t all prompted by a deep instinct or fear of the vet; he just wanted to get back to his owner. Though they express it more subtly than dogs, research has found that cats love their humans and form a deep attachment with their owners. FLORIDA CAT’S EPIC GETAWAY FROM THE VET

“There was George, stretched out in his chair in our carport, looking like he had just returned from a grand adventure,” Bob told reporters. “He was a bit thinner, clearly hungry, but otherwise no worse for the wear.” Though George was unscathed, his journey home was no walk in the park. He had to trek through multiple subdivisions, maneuver around a couple of lakes, and cross five or six roads to reach his destination.

Bob was relieved to find George safe and sound, but said he would have done it just a little differently if he ever found himself fleeing his doctor’s appointment.

On the day of the incident, George managed to pop his cage open and scurry out in a matter of seconds. Still loopy on anesthesia, the housecat evaded clinic staff, scaling up fencing before disappearing. Employees did everything they could to stop the escape artist, lifting each other over fences, but George was too quick and determined to catch.

“If I had been stuck there, I would’ve called an Uber. But George didn’t have that option.”
