A TALE OF HUMANITY
AMID TRAGEDY ‘THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN’ BY JIM DEFEDE
If you were alive on Sept. 11, 2001, you likely know precisely what you were doing on that fateful day. It likely started the same as any other day. You woke up early, got ready for school or work, and headed out the door to start your day. Before long, your workplace or school got quiet as
everyone turned their attention to the TV, trying to determine if we were under attack. As the hours passed and the situation became
more dire, people headed home to spend time with their loved ones, unsure what would happen next.
Lentil and Sweet Potato Stew
For many of us, those images and feelings are cemented into our memory. You may have even supplemented your knowledge by
watching every documentary or reading new information about the events. While most of our attention was on New York City, have you ever wondered what happened to the planes in the air that had to be immediately grounded?
What about those traveling into the country from overseas? “The Day the World Came to Town” by Jim DeFede is an excellent book that answers this question.
This delicious dish will keep your family warm, full, and happy as the weather cools down.
Every day, thousands of people come into the country on airlines, but when 9/11 occurred and planes weren’t allowed into the country, where did these people go? Many ended up in Gander, Newfoundland, a city of 6,000 people north of the border. This city had an unused military airport with long runways, which made it the perfect place for international travelers to wait out the situation. Thirty-seven planes landed at that airport during 9/11, and the residents had to band together to house, feed, and care for these individuals, most of whom didn’t have any clothing because the airlines would not let them collect their luggage from the aircraft. This feel-good book shows that the best of humanity can come out during the worst possible situations. It’s not all happy, as you might expect from a story about such an unprecedented time in our country’s history, but it’s well worth the read. And if you don’t enjoy reading, there is a musical that tells their story called “Come From Away.” You can find the Broadway version of the show streaming on Apple TV+.
