Key Takeaways According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), only 25% of 16-year-olds had a driver’s license in 2021 compared to 43% in 1997. This supports the trend of Gen-Zers waiting until later in life to get a driver’s license or not driving at all and may indicate a greater demand for alternative modes of transportation in the future. Seniors, 55 years or older, currently make up about 20% of the population, which may increase within the next decade and lead to greater demand for senior housing options, medical facilities, and transportation services. In fact, over a third of survey respondents indicated the need for more senior housing options in the study area. Roughly 21% of Eastside families live below the federal poverty line which is higher than City (13%) and region (11%). This figure may be driven, in part, by the large number of unhoused families and individuals living in the Eastside. The study will need to address the demand for more quality affordable housing options in the Eastside but also consider ways to accommodate.
