E XISTING T RANSIT S ERVICE C HARACTERISTICS
Transit trips take longer than other modes of transportation in the study area. The average distance traveled for a transit trip is only 13.5 miles, yet transit riders spend an average of 63 minutes per trip. Based on average Eastside travel times by mode in Figure 17, someone traveling by car can make four trips in the time it takes a bus rider to make one trip, in one direction. Longer transit travel times and trip distances may be the result of few direct transit routes to job centers and other key destinations, and too many stops along existing routes.
Figure 17: Average Trip Duration and Average Trip Distance by Transportation Mode
Study area transit headways currently range between 15 and 45 minutes. Interestingly, the routes that provide service to the top destinations in the study area (regardless of mode) all have 30 minutes headways. Figure 18 illustrates existing transit headways and the top overall trip destinations in the study area. There is opportunity to increase transit trips taken to the Eastchase Village, Eastchase Market, and Woodcreek Village shopping centers if service frequency is increased and direct routes are added.
