The nickname “ cup of joe ” has two main origin stories. The most popular ties back to Josephus Daniels, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, who banned alcohol on ships in 1914—leaving coffee as the strongest drink aboard. Sailors jokingly called it “Joe,” and the name stuck. Another theory comes from “ jamoke ” (a mashup of Java + Mocha), which over time shortened to “Joe.” Either way, the term reflects coffee’s everyday appeal, simple, friendly, and comforting.
