The AHL Insider August & September 2025 Edition

National Coffee Day is Brewing! The Day is celebrated every year on September 29 , making it a highlight for coffee lovers everywhere. This date marks a special occasion dedicated to recognizing the global love for coffee and its deep cultural significance. Why Do We Call It a “Cup of Joe”? The nickname “ cup of joe ” has two main origin stories. The most popular ties back to Josephus Daniels, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, who banned alcohol on ships in 1914—leaving coffee as the strongest drink aboard. Sailors jokingly called it “Joe,” and the name stuck. Another theory comes from “ jamoke ” (a mashup of Java + Mocha), which over time shortened to “Joe.” Either way, the term reflects coffee’s everyday appeal, simple, friendly, and comforting.
