per cubic yard. Mining followed the paystreak upstream and the glacial tills over the pay were as deep as 200 feet thick. A large landslide into the pit ending mining. Mining continues on White Creek, the left limit tributary to Valdez Creek abo- ve the slump. “This deposit model has not been used in exp- loration in other glaciated areas of Alaska but should be. Consulting geologists are at their best when given the task of researching an area with the objective of developing new ideas. “Millrock’s recent acquisition of a large block of claims around the Pogo Mine area is an example of this approach. Millrock’s play has great potential. “My wife, Carolyn, a geologist and partner in our business, died suddenly several years ago. She did petrographic work for a variety of clients, wro- te reports, and was the editor of the AMA Journal for eight years. “The AMA will play an important role in the future of mining in Alaska. With Deantha as our Executive Director, a strong and knowledgeable Executive Board, and good leadership by our com- mittee chairman, and an involved membership, we can face the challenges ahead which are nu- merous.” Read more of Don’s story at www.stevexp.com.

A total of 25,000 ounces was mined after the discovery of the buried Tammany Channel.” “In 1980, a small group of companies leased the lower Valdez Creek claims and hired me as their placer consultant. I read all the old reports and modern literature on the area and decided there was room on the north side of lower Valdez Creek for another buried canyon. We immediately drilled the deepest part of canyon and found a placer gold deposit. I then designed a two-year drilling program following this discovery of what became known as Channel A. The rest is history. “Over a 10-year period, that mine produced more than 700,000 ounces of gold, with 102,000 ounces in the best year.
