While many living in comfortable faraway plac- es may romanticize about the images from the old black-and-white movie Nanook of the North, the harsh reality is that the invasion of the mod- ern world has brought both modern opportunities and modern challenges to the Arctic. It has brought LWXTY`X ^VTʬ^ ^YZbXZMTWP^ LYO [P_]ZWP`X LYO XP_LWML^POʭ^STYRRPL]_ZL]PRTZYbSP]PT_T^YZ_ uncommon to pay $8 per gallon for fuel. All of this is X`NSXZ]PLʬZ]OLMWPbSPYUZM^LYOOTaTOPYO^NZXP from Native corporations like NANA and paychecks come from mines like Red Dog and modern oil and gas operations in the neighboring North Slope region. In the case of Red Dog, not only does the mine pro- vide economic opportunity for people of the region, but it also produces zinc. Zinc is most commonly known for its use in alloys such as brass, nickel, and LW`XTY`XDP_eTYNSL^Z_SP]\`LWT_TP^XZ^_YZ_L - bly its use in many of multivitamin supplements. It T^LW^ZZYPZQ_SPXZ^_NZ^_PʬPN_TaP_]PL_XPY_^QZ] diarrhea, a massive killer of children in third- and fourth-world countries. In fact, even most Alaskans are unaware that Teck LYO @94.01 PY_P]PO TY_Z L [L]_YP]^ST[ _Z ^LaP _SP lives of vulnerable children in India and elsewhere.
Their program under the Zinc Alliance for Child Health targeted improving access to zinc supple- ments and oral rehydration salts to treat diarrhea while strengthening healthcare systems and im- []ZaTYR^`[[WdNSLTY^LN]Z^^4YOTL@94.01P^_TXL_ - ed that the program with Teck would save 100,000 NSTWO]PYɪ^WTaP^TY4YOTLZaP]LʭaPdPL][P]TZO ?ST^ TYT_TL_TaP QZWWZbPO L $ @94.01 [L]_YP] - ship with the Clinton Foundation, Teck and other mining companies to combat diarrhea in Nepal and Peru. In announcing that initiative, former president Bill Clinton called for greater awareness and under- standing of the importance of zinc in nutrition: “This is something 90% of us are unaware of or wouldn’t have a clue as to what to do about it,” he said. /ZYP ]TRS_ YL_`]LW ]P^Z`]NP OPaPWZ[XPY_ ZʬP]^ unlimited opportunity to lift up parts of society hit by the most challenging social and economic woes. A starting point in this approach is our thinking and adoption of a glass-half-full mindset to embrace the fact that both responsible natural resource develop- ment and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, and Alaska is one of the global case studies in doing that right.
