Most articulated they had not only gained the ability to speak in front of a group but were proud to do so. Following the graduation, each of the eight stu- dents left looking forward to the two weeks of paid apprenticeship ahead. All were headed to Anchorage to dip their toe into the pool of work experience. -TWT^_L3ZWOTYR77.D`VZY0\`T[XPY_LYO2]LY - ite Construction all held spots for the new graduates/ 0C.07TY_P]Y^_ZʭYOZ`_XZ]PLMZ`_RZTYR_ZbZ]V They all started their internships the next morning, bright and early. Now, with 2 weeks of training and 2 weeks of paid apprenticeship behind them, two of the graduates will be working with Donlin Gold LLC as drillers’ assistants. Two are bound for college in the fall. One has his sights set on the Air Force, learning about the GI Bill and how it can help with tuition. A sixth has submitted a resume and cover letter at the ]P\`P^_ZQ>LX-]TNP_ZRZ_ZbZ]VQZ]STX_SPWZNL - tion has yet to be determined. Still others have appli- cations pending for other endeavors beyond MAPTS LYO0C.07^`NSL^,A?0.5ZM.Z][^@YTaP]^T_dZQ Alaska, and more. The “future history” of Alaska’s mining indus- _]d T^ LWTaP LYO bPWW bT_S PO`NL_TZY Q]ZX 0C.07ɪ^ OPOTNL_POLYO_LWPY_PO^_LʬLYO_SPT]bTWWTYRYP^^_Z RZ_SPPc_]LXTWPLYORZZʬ_SPR]TOBT_S0C.07ɪ^ partnerships, opportunities and training such as the MAPTS Capstone for rural Alaskan youth would not be so readily available.

Pc[P]TPYNP^ QZ] L ^TRYTʭNLY_ Y`XMP] ZQ ^_`OPY_^ seventh-graders will be in camp for four days. Some ʭYO _SPX^PWaP^ OT^_]L`RS_ bT_S SZXP^TNVYP^^ 4_ɪ^ NZXXZY LYO _SP 0C.07 ^_Lʬ T^ _]LTYPO LYO Pc[P - rienced in dealing with these situations. Several of them have been through the program themselves. 0C.07R]Zb^_SPT]ZbY The MAPTS team of instructors rose to the chal- lenge. They run the program as if they are at a func- tioning, producing mining camp. The expectations of these young trainees were exactly the same as the older attendees. As it turns out, the biggest challenge was to wean them from their cell phones. There is no place for such distractions in a classroom, much less ZYL[TPNPZQSPLadP\`T[XPY_L_LXTYP^T_P As the days progressed, each student gained more and more experience and each found they gained something unexpected within themselves. >PWQNZYʭOPYNP bL^ L XLUZ] Md[]ZO`N_ ZQ _ST^ program, and it showed. Towards the end of their time at MAPTS, they competed amongst themselves, moving large rocks and crushed rock to see who could perform each given task the fastest and with _SPXZ^_PʯNTPYNd4Y_SPWZLOP]PaP]d^TYRWPZYPZQ _SP^_`OPY_^NZ`WO[P]QZ]X_SP]P\`P^_PO_L^VQL^_P] than the fastest of the previous class made up of old- er students. In the fork-lift, the young drivers were LMWP_Z[WLNP]ZNV^XZ]P[]PNT^PWdLYOXZ]P\`TNVWd than in many classes before them.
