Keeping the Tradition Alive

Bar J Entertainment

As summer came to an end, we celebrated the season with an event we try hard not to miss: the Bar J Chuckwagon in Jackson Hole. If family is in town, we take them to the Bar J Chuckwagon. If it’s just Jeanelle and me, we head to Jackson Hole and take ourselves out to dinner and the show at Humphrey Ranch. If a friend is visiting, we take them to the Bar J Chuckwagon. This year, my best man from our wedding was in town, so, of course, we took him to the show for many laughs and an authentic Chuckwagon dinner. You can count on a tasty all-you-can-eat meal with barbecued steak and chicken, baked potatoes, biscuits, beans with molasses, spice cake, and applesauce. It’s all served on a tin plate, and, even if you don’t want the applesauce, you’re sure to take a scoop of it because it’s the only food that makes your metal plate cool enough to hold onto! After we ate, five of the Wranglers stood on stage and performed country-western music — cowboy classics like Gene Autry and Hank Williams. We sat in the front row, right in the middle, and were closer than we’d ever been before to the entertainment. With as much energy and enthusiasm as ever, the Wranglers harmonized beautifully and told plenty of jokes that kept the crowd laughing. It’s a pretty wonderful way to spend an evening. The Bar J Chuckwagon has been going for 42 years, all starting with the founder, Babe Humphrey, who came to Jackson Hole in the mid-‘70s. He bought some land, called it Humphrey Ranch, and the Wranglers have been entertaining people ever since. One of the Wranglers, Tim Hodgson, joined the group in 1989, the same year we moved to Star Valley. Tim is starting his 31st year with the Chuckwagon as we start our 30th year here in Wyoming. He’s a four-time Idaho State Champion fiddler, a two-time U.S. Open fiddler, a two-time National Men’s Champion fiddler, and a talented singer to boot.

At the close of the show, I went to tell Tim what an amazing job I thought he did. “I want you to know, you’re a professional in what you do,” I said.

“We work at it,” Tim replied.

“I can relate to what you do as a performer,” I told Tim. “I’ve been practicing dentistry for 30 years, about as long as you’ve been performing. Your performance tonight was just as close to perfect as it was 30 years ago, but you make it seem like it’s the first time you’re doing it. It feels new.” I explained that I sometimes feel that as a dentist. With every patient I see, I approach each checkup as if it’s the first time, putting my all into being as close to perfect as possible. In 30 years of dental practice, it’s a life lesson for me: I want to always be at my best and treat everyone as if we’re meeting them for the first time. Like Tim, I want to leave a great first impression, even if it’s the 31st time I’m working with them. For Jeanelle and me, the Bar J Chuckwagon has become something of a family tradition. Finding good, clean entertainment enriches your life. We only pass through this earthly existence once, and there’s enough sadness and strife out there that when something makes us smile and laugh, all I want to do is sit back and enjoy it.

muscles, and improve circulation. Part of the reason people may experience headaches is the increased pressure placed on nerves and blood vessels due to tension. During a massage, a therapist will apply pressure to specific areas to release tension and encourage circulation. If you suffer from headaches, you’ve probably tried just about everything to ease them. Sometimes, it feels like there’s no cure. Tension headaches can feel like a vise-like grip around your forehead or skull. They stem from the tightening of the muscles along the head, face, and neck. Other people experience vascular headaches associated with a pounding or throbbing sensation. These headaches happen when the blood vessels that carry blood to the head become constricted. Luckily, massage can help ease the pain related to both types.

THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE Massage therapy can bring relief from tension and vascular headaches by addressing both physical and emotional cues. Massages help ease muscle tension, relax the body, lengthen

The Free Radical 411 How to Minimize Age-Inducing Atoms

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to entirely avoid free radicals and the havoc they wreak. The process that forms free radicals, called oxidative stress, can be kick-started by a variety of different substances found in food, water, medicine, and even the air we breathe, according to the Huntington’s Outreach Project for Education at Stanford University. Unsurprisingly, these substances are things already considered unhealthy, like alcohol, exposure to X-rays, ozone, fried food, chemical pesticides, air pollutants, and tobacco smoke. That said, there is one molecule that is stable enough to stand up to and reduce free radicals: the antioxidant. According to a study published by Pharmacognosy Reviews, antioxidants can “donate an electron to a rampaging free radical and neutralize it, thus reducing its ability to damage.” Synthetic antioxidants exist but can sometimes have harmful side effects, so scientists advise protecting yourself by avoiding free radical triggers like alcohol, processed foods, and red meat, and ingesting natural antioxidants in the form of berries, stone fruits, olives, onions, garlic, and green and black teas. Herbs and spices like cinnamon, basil, turmeric, and fenugreek can ratchet up your antioxidant levels too. While it can’t guarantee immortality, the right diet can certainly help you stave off aging and disease, so why not start today?

If you’ve ever picked up a health magazine while waiting at the doctor’s office, then you’re probably familiar with the term “free radicals” — at least enough

to know that they get a bad rap from doctors and beauticians

alike. But what are they, exactly?

According to Live Science, free radicals are atoms with unpaired electrons that have split off from oxygen molecules in the body and started to “scavenge” for other electrons to pair with. That wouldn’t be problematic, except that these atoms tend to damage cells, lipids, proteins, and even DNA along the way, and that destruction has serious consequences. As Live Science puts it, “Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and many others. They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage.”

The Best Season for Fishing

Calling All Anglers This Is the Best Season for Fly-Fishing in Wyoming

Though the weather is cooling and the sun is starting to set earlier every evening, not everything is winding down. October is prime fly-fishing season, with brown trout spawning in spectacular spots around the North Platte. Cutthroat trout, the only trout native to Wyoming, are also abundant this time of year. While brown, cutthroat, lake, and rainbow trout are what our waters are best known for, Wyoming has over 22 species of game fish. The Miracle Mile near Casper might be one of the best sections for those looking to get some sure catches. If there’s one bountiful thing here in Wyoming, it’s beautiful sections of wild waters that give rise to perfect fly-fishing conditions. Of the thousands of miles of fishable rivers and streams Wyoming houses, Salt River and the Green River just below the Wind River Range are the stuff of an angler’s dreams. Encampment River, particularly the lower section, is a beautiful spot to cast a rod, as well. Keep in mind that many of the prime fishing spots are also in bear territory, so bring bear spray and keep a safe distance from wildlife.

Before you head out, check the Wyoming Game and Fish regulatory guidelines to ensure you’re abiding by the fishing limits and check to see that your fishing license is up to date. Certain rivers that cross private land also require people fishing to stay in their boats, so take a look beforehand to see what the restrictions are where you’ll be. Then, go and enjoy your gorgeous fall day on the water.
