The Best Season for Fishing

Calling All Anglers This Is the Best Season for Fly-Fishing in Wyoming

Though the weather is cooling and the sun is starting to set earlier every evening, not everything is winding down. October is prime fly-fishing season, with brown trout spawning in spectacular spots around the North Platte. Cutthroat trout, the only trout native to Wyoming, are also abundant this time of year. While brown, cutthroat, lake, and rainbow trout are what our waters are best known for, Wyoming has over 22 species of game fish. The Miracle Mile near Casper might be one of the best sections for those looking to get some sure catches. If there’s one bountiful thing here in Wyoming, it’s beautiful sections of wild waters that give rise to perfect fly-fishing conditions. Of the thousands of miles of fishable rivers and streams Wyoming houses, Salt River and the Green River just below the Wind River Range are the stuff of an angler’s dreams. Encampment River, particularly the lower section, is a beautiful spot to cast a rod, as well. Keep in mind that many of the prime fishing spots are also in bear territory, so bring bear spray and keep a safe distance from wildlife.

Before you head out, check the Wyoming Game and Fish regulatory guidelines to ensure you’re abiding by the fishing limits and check to see that your fishing license is up to date. Certain rivers that cross private land also require people fishing to stay in their boats, so take a look beforehand to see what the restrictions are where you’ll be. Then, go and enjoy your gorgeous fall day on the water.
