Mark and Luke

May 1 . “When they had heard what great things he did, [they] came unto him” (Mark 3:8). Lord Jesus, today may I make re port of the great things Thou hast done for me that any whom Thou wilt send to me may come to Thee. “Just to know Thee and to show Thee, Lord, Just to see Thee and to help the rest \ to see Just to gird me with the Sword Of the truth which is Thy Word That I fail not t h o s e w h o m Thou wouldst send to me.” —Dr. Elsie Storrs Dow. May 2 “When they w e r e a l o n e , he ex pounded all things to his disciples” (Mark 4:34). Jesus Christ promised that the Holy Spirit would be our teacher. When we are alone with Him, He shows unto us the things of Christ. The blessed se crets of the Lord are shared with His beloved ones in the intimacy of alone- ness with Him. May I -not lose the riches „of these secrets, and may the resultant radiance shine out in re freshing sunlight to others. May 3 “And Jesus went with him” (Mark 5:24). In this story, Jairus makes a request of Jesus: “I pray thee come . . .” And the Lord granted his request. Do we really believe that Jesus goes with us in these days? He said, “I will never leave thee.” Let us rest today in the consciousness that our Lord, Saviour, Redeemer and Friend goes with us. When Jesus went with Jairus, the multitude followed Him. If we rest in the fact that Jesus goes with us today, many will see and follow Him. Blessed privilege of companionship and wit ness! May 4 “He called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth . . . And commanded them that they should take, nothing for their journey, save a staff only” (Mark 6:7, 8).'

These messengers needed to take no supplies with them. They were being sent out by the One in whom all true provision is found. Because they were sent by the Lord, their preaching was with power. May we go today in the power of His sending, and with faith in the sufficiency of His supply into the place of His choosing. Thus will His name be honored, His purpose ac complished, and our joy will be full. May 3 “Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand” (Mark 7:14). Do you need guidance in worship and service? Listen as Jesus Himself calls you to Him and c o m m a n d s , “Hearken . . . and understand.” Chris tianity is of the heart, by way of the head. It is pre-eminently a relation to Jesus Christ, not the observance of any ritual, however simple. Let Him con trol your heart and your head will direct activity that is pleasing to Him. Listen, and understanding Him, obey His commands. May 6 “The disciples had forgotten to take bread” (Mark 8:14). Before you left your room this morn ing, did you remember to listen to what the Lord had to say to you from His own Book? He would have you take that spiritual bread to share it with whomever you contact today. That hungry soul beside you in the daily rush needs just the bit of com: fort you can give to him if you have found the secret of remembering to live close enough to Him that you have “bread” to spare. May 7 “ If thou canst believe, all things are possible” '(Mark 9:23). The “if” is present in every life. The attitude toward it determines triumph or defeat. Faith can take each “ if” and make it into a positive power so that because of it, a refreshing stream of usefulness will flow out of the life in increasing abundance. Let Jesus Himself overcome the questioning in

your heart, and you shall see the glory of God here and now. May 8 “Jesus went before them: and they were amazed” (Mark 10:32). As Jesus went before the disciples, so He will go before His followers of today. Shall I follow a m a z e d and afraid? Or shall I go in c o n f i d e n t quietness? He has promised to go be fore us and His promises never fail. Trust Him today as He walks ahead of you, and you will be astonished at His tender s o l i c i t u d e for you. “When he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them” (John 10:4). May 9 “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22). Faith is the ability to believe. This ability is inherent in every individual soul. But what is believed, and who is believed, rests with each person. The admonition here is to believe God. Do you? If your heart is restless, your mind ill at ease, your soul discontent ed, you are failing to believe Him, and neglecting to accept His gracious love for you. If you do believe Him, you have complete heart rest. May 10 “Jesus . . . said, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scrip tures, neither the power of God?” (Mark 12:24). This passage is a challenge to us today to learn God’s Word: not the mere reading of it, but meditation upon its words; not the repetition of its verses, but the real understanding of its truths. Let us know what the Word says and we will not err; and the power of God will lift us above all circumstances. May 11 “Then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26). “Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20). Let the latter verse be a f e r v e n t prayer, a heart desire; let it motivate an increased missionary zeal, a yearn ing for holiness, a renewed hunger in your heart for unending fellowship
