SAFETY OFFICER

The Safety Officer’s function is to develop and recommend measures for assuring personnel safety, and to assess and/or anticipate hazardous or unsafe situations.

The Safety Officer is part of the Command Staff and only one Safety Officer is assigned for each incident. The Safety Officer may have assistants, and the assistants may represent agencies or jurisdictions. Safety assistants may have specific responsibilities such as air operations, hazardous materials, or others. q Identify potential or existing safety issues associated with the incident, or with the response to the incident q Review the Incident Action Plan for safety implications q Issue safety advisories or warnings in the IAP or by other necessary means q Exercise the authority to stop any unsafe activities q Investigate accidents that may occur within the incident area q Review and approve the medical plan q Assign assistants as needed, and coordinate with safety officers of other agencies or jurisdictions q Identify and utilize technical experts that may be able to address a particular hazard q Maintain Unit Log (ICS 214)
