MASS ILLNESS

Mass illness can be caused by disease organisms or by exposure to toxic substances. Exposure can result from skin contact, ingestion of food or water, or breathing airborne substances or organisms.

If you or someone around you becomes ill, especially if the onset is sudden: 1. Is there more than one person affected?

2. Does the illness seem to originate from or be confined to a specific area? 3. Did those affected engage in similar activity, such as sharing a meal? 4. If symptoms appear serious or life threatening, such as shortness of breath, uncontrolled vomiting, altered mental status or unconsciousness, call 911 immediately. 5. Follow the guidelines listed in Hazardous Materials.

FIRE

1. If you notice fire, smoke, or any evidence of fire, shout a warning to the occupants and activate the building fire alarm. 2. Call 911 to give the location and description of the fire. 3. Attempt rescue efforts only if there is no immediate danger to yourself. 4. If the fire is small, and if you have had training, use the proper type of fire extinguisher to control and extinguish the fire. Do this only after the evacuation has started and the emergency number (911) has been called. 5. Close all doors and windows in the vicinity of the fire. 6. Go to the nearest exit and leave the building.

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS!

Know the location of fire extinguishers, fire exits, and alarm systems in your area and know how to use them.

When the building evacuation alarm is sounded, walk to the nearest marked exit and ask others to do the same.
