General Education Implementation

Our biggest priority over the next year is the planning and preparation for implementation of the new General Education program. The transition to the new program will provide students with new opportunities to engage in learning and in the community early in their college careers, make connections, and think critically. We believe the program will enhance both recruitment and retention efforts. The General Education Implementation Taskforce completed its work this summer and has worked closely with the Executive Committee to craft charges for the General Education Committee to continue implementation planning throughout the year. The Senate will vote on whether or not to move forward with Fall 19 implementation of the program on October 31. Following approval from the Senate, we will continue to address the many tasks associated with implementation of a new program and teach-out of our current general education program. We believe we have a solid plan and appreciate the support from the Provost, President, and university community in implementing this new program. The Senate is actively involved in conversations about the implementation of Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) and Activity Based Budgeting (ABB), and possible revisions to the implementation of the model to better achieve the potential benefits of RCM/ABB. We are particularly interested in strategies to direct more money toward the mission of the university by decentralizing and directing resources from the College to the Department level. This model is more aligned with the philosophy of RCM/ABB and the original conceptualization of the budget model, and is essential for departments to function in innovative ways.
