Legislature Candidates Guide

to government. I support and will push hard to put a spending cap on the state budget. The Permanent Fund was created to provide a source of interest income to run our state in times of need. The dividend program was added to give Alaskans a stake in the Fund, but our stake is solely based on the success of the Fund, which is based on the development of Alaska’s resources. If we spend the Fund now — we kill the golden goose. Alaskans gain maximum benefit by supporting resource development to feed the golden goose so it can continue to provide dividends long into the future. My name is Andy Holleman and I’ve lived in south Anchorage for over 30 years. I bought my first house here in 1989 and have lived here since. I was lucky enough to work in south Anchor- age quite a bit as well. I was a mechanic at the Anchorage Golf Course during construction and during the early years of the course. Later, I finished a Biology degree at UAA and taught in Anchorage schools for 20 years, spending 12 years at Gold - enview Middle. So I’ve got a lot of time on this side of town and with a lot of south Anchorage families. I’ve been a member of Rabbit Creek Community Council, and then the Huffman/O’Malley CC, and with HALO for a long time. Most importantly, we need a budget that’s balanced and that we can sustain. There are ways we can move our bud- get away from being so dependent on oil prices and production if we practice some discipline. Instead, our recent Andy Holleman, Unaffiliated Candidate legislators have drained our savings and left us here with no plan for the future. It’s not that complicated, but polit- ically it is hard. In the meantime, we need to take steps to broaden different economic activities, and that includes encouraging mining and other resource development which I support. I was a member of the Republican Party for 45 years. Frankly, the parties jockeying for power has not served us well. I’ve been unaffiliated for 4 years. I’m on the ballot by nominating peti- tion and well over 300 voters in district M signed to get me there. I won’t be beholden to anyone in Juneau for my job if you elect me. I’ll be there to represent citizens in District M.

Senate District N Carolyn “Care” Clift, Undeclared Candidate

Care is a mother, a grandmother, and a teacher. Alaskans are fiercely inde - pendent, and we all need someone in the legislature who will defend and en- courage that independence. She is run- ning to be your independent voice in the Alaska Senate. Like many of you, Care has watched, with dismay, as our legis- lators have disrespected hard-working, individual Alaskans. They have decid- ed that they know best what all of our families and communities need, and they know best how to spend our money on the things that they think we want. The State of Alaska’s relationship with the mining industry should pri- marily be one of business-to-business, according to the Alaska Constitution, the resources belong to the people of Alaska. As a business, selling a raw ma- terial, the State should set a fair price for the resource, and stick to that price, mutually agreed. The price/royalty could be a percentage of the market price. There should never be a fluctuation in the percentage. Care is against taxes, in general, and feels that all corpora- tions should be taxed at the same rate, with no differentiation between the oil industry, the coal industry, or even a transportation industry. Most impor- tantly, there should be no “progressive” fluctuation in taxes, so that expenses and profits can be easily figured. Care’s platform is all about protect- ing individual choices for all Alaskans. She will not cut public school choices. She will restore your Permanent Fund Dividend. Care will also sponsor legis- lation for due process in family courts, sustainable resource development, more choice in elections, protection of all rights for all people, protection of the right to associate, and to get citizens back to work. Make a real change in Juneau. Vote for Care Clift! Roger Holland, Republican Candidate The economic landscape in Alas- ka can look pretty bleak if you aren’t willing to look below the surface. The COVID-19 virus is not the only thing Alaskans are facing in the wake of our shutdown. Our solid foundation, built on small businesses and families like yours has been rocked, and we need leadership to get our economy back up
