Legislature Candidates Guide

let me know what you want me to do. I will do my best to carry out your plans and ideas. If you want someone to tell you what to do, lead you by the nose and dictate to you, that’s not me. I am running to give my neighbors a choice of who will represent them in Juneau. This year is crisis. Our Alas- ka economy has been stressed to the breaking point by the Covid-19 pan- demic. Tourism was crippled this sum- mer. Oil prices plummeted due to mar- ket forces. Service industry businesses have closed. The workers sent home. Usually with no expectation of when their next paycheck will be coming. In January, the State House and Sen- ate, must find a way to pay for running the state government and funding state programs. Health, education and sup- port programs are critical. I support: n Fair and equal treatment for all persons. n A strong public education system. n Protection of the Alaska Perma- nent Fund. n Improving infrastructure. n Fiscal responsibility. I have lived in the same house in Eagle River, Alaska, for the past twen- ty-three years. My children grew up here. My daughter is a local school nurse. My son-in-law is an Anchorage Fireman. I know you all work hard in your jobs. I support a robust and successful mining industry in Alaska. I have par- ticipated in a briefing from the AMA and Council of Alaska Producers. What you do in Alaska is impressive. All the more so because most of it is accomplished in remote locations. I look forward to working with you in the future. I’m Representative Kelly Merrick, a lifelong Alaskan with a passion for bringing people together. I am a firm believer that when we listen more than we speak good things can happen. My aim is to heal the divisiveness that has plagued Juneau and to find solutions to move the state forward. House District 14 Kelly Merrick, Republican Candidate As a strong conservative, I fought for budget reductions on the House Finance Committee. Coming out of the COVID-19 shutdowns, we need proven leaders who are not afraid to prioritize the things that are most important and get our

economy working for Alaskans again. Alaska is a resource state. I know without robust investment in developing those resources – including minerals, oil, fish, timber, and other resources – we will likely never close the fiscal gap. We must safely and responsibly develop our natural resources to boost revenues while getting spending under control. I am dedicated to creating good jobs for Alaskans and to getting the economy back on track. I hope to continue serving Alaska as a common-sense advocate for conserva- tive values and an effective voice for the people of Eagle River. House District 15 David Nelson, Republican Candidate David Nelson works on JBER at the Missile Defense Agency. Committed to community service, he is a leader in the Northeast Community Council Safety Patrol, president of the Anchorage Mid- town Rotary Club, and was appointed to the Alaska Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. David earned a BA in Polit- ical Science at the University of Alaska Anchorage and is an officer in the Alas - ka Army National Guard. Count on David Nelson to: Crack down on criminals, restore public safety, and make our neighbor- hoods safe again. Stop the Legislature from playing politics with our Permanent Fund Div- idends, restore the statutory PFD, and protect the PFD in our State Constitu- tion. Reject reckless and wasteful new tax schemes and submit every measure to raise taxes or create new taxes to a vote of the people. Put a tough new Spending Cap in our Constitution. Organize a new Republican House Majority committed to reining in run- away spending, putting an end to costly and endless Special Legislative Sessions, and making the Legislature get its work done on time. Support Mining across Alaska. Min- ing plays an important role not only in the state Economy but for the worldwide one as well. Thousands of high paying jobs and critical infrastructure created by Mining help keep the Alaska econo- my healthy.
