If I Built a House Written and illustrated by chris van dusen
978-0-545-86785-6
A creative boy named Jack shares with his mother the many unique and interesting features that he would include in a house that he imagines building. And the home he has planned is anything but bland! Read-Aloud Prompts (Whole Group) Review the steps in “Modeling a Read-Aloud” ( Summer Reading Planning Guide, page 16) to prepare for sharing this book. You can also use the following prompts, along with prompts of your own, to engage the group before, during, and after reading. 1. Organize the group. Check that everyone has a clear view of the book. 2. Explore the cover. Run your finger under the title and the author’s name as you read them aloud, and ask: • How do you think the words and picture here might relate to the story? Explain that this book is fiction. It is about imaginary characters and events. 3. Preview the book. Take a picture walk through the book, then ask: • What do you think Jack is doing at the beginning of the story? • What does he seem to be doing throughout most of the story? • What might the woman at the end of the story be thinking? 4. Activate prior knowledge. Before reading the book, ask: • How is a blueprint—or a building plan—helpful to people who build houses? • Why would a planner make a model before beginning to build? • Have you ever drawn a plan for something you wanted to make? If so, share about your plan. 5. Introduce vocabulary. Name and define the words bland, norm, function, dome, unique, decor, gravity, rare, detaches, bold, exquisitely, and hailed . (Then, during the read-aloud, you might pause when you come to these words to check for understanding.) • What do you think this book will be about? Point to the picture on the front cover and ask: • What do you think the boy is doing? How does he feel? Show the back cover and ask:

You might find it helpful to write your specific questions and comments on sticky notes and attach them to the edges of the corresponding pages.
Alma and How She Got Her Name Juana Martinez-Neal Before Reading Read the title and look at the illustration on the front cover. Then read the text on the back of the book. Together, talk about your own full names. Are your names long? While Reading As you read, pause to discuss what is happening in the story. Why does Alma think that her name is too long? Invite your child to count how many names Alma has. What does Alma’s father mean when he says that Alma can decide if her name “fits”? How can someone’s name fit? As Alma’s father tells her the story of her names, ask your child to describe howAlma is feeling. Encourage your child to describe howAlma connects with (compares herself to) each relative for whom she’s named. After Reading Share what you know about your own names. Discuss whether you feel like your names “fit” you, and why or why not. Just for fun, share another name you think might fit you. Literacy Tip Remind your child that proper names, like Alma, Sofia, Esperanza, etc., always begin with a capital letter. (Sentences start with capital letters too!) Thumb through the book and invite your child to point out the capital letters in the text. Want to make it a challenge? Invite your child to count the capital letters on each page!
As you read, remember to: articulate words clearly use lots of expression allow time for taking in the text and illustrations pause for questions and responses encourage discussion and sharing
