The Vankleek Hill Cougars are off to a winning start for the new season in the National Capital Junior Hockey League after shredding the Morrisburg Lions 3-0 in the Showcase series over the September 22 weekend. The Showcase opener event took place Saturday at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau with all 10 teams in the NCJHL matched up for a game each during the day. Cougars General Manager Marc Bernique said the games went on as scheduled in spite of the havoc that a tornado the night before wreaked on the Gatineau area. “There was no change in plan,” Bernique said. “Getting there (to Gatineau) was some- thing else, though, depending on where you were coming from.” Scoring for the Cougars were Ryan Allen, Nicolas Castonguay, and Jonathan Leblanc. Ryan also made a goal assist during the game. Also assisting on the scoring were Kyle Giroux, Trystan Lavoie, and Xavier Lemoine. Sébastien Moreau guarded the Cougars net. Almost all local Bernique noted that this season’s Cou- gars roster is “about 80 per cent” local players with many returning veterans and a number of new players coming on board from the area. “We’ll make the playoffs for sure,” he said, noting that North Dundas, Gatineau and St-Isidore should prove the toughest competition that the Cougars and other NCJHL clubs face during the season. He estimates the Cougars should be in the top half of the league standings as the season plays out. “We’ve got good speed,” he said. “We’ve got two top lines, and our goaltending is going to be pretty good.” Joining veteran Cougars netminder Morin will be Frédéric Durocher, whose experience includes playing for the Fusion in the minor hockey division and also with the Almonte Sharpshooters. The Cougars host Saint-Isidore Saturday night at the Vankleek Hill Arena then hit the road Sunday afternoon to play the Castors in Clarence Creek.
