Undergraduate numbers have risen for a second year in a row, with new student enrollment increasing by more than 20% in the past two years, making the incoming undergraduate class one of the largest in more than two decades. Meanwhile, graduate school numbers are also surging, with a remarkable 13% increase since fall 2022, marking an all-time high for YU. READ MORE

The certificate programs cover a wide spectrum, including AI, project management, human resources, and financial analysis, while also providing access to career counseling and job search services. Fall Orientation: The Students Are Back! From Tuesday, Aug. 22, through Sunday, Aug. 27, YU warmly welcomed a record-breaking number of new undergraduates to the Wilf and Beren Campuses for a fall orientation focused on “Discovering Your Potential.” Across six days, students from around the globe immersed themselves in YU’s vibrant campus culture. From attending uplifting shiurim and engaging with academic advisers to learning about library services, club hours and dorm rooms, students embraced the essence of campus life. Off-campus events in Manhattan added to the excitement, and inspiring Shabbat programming strengthened bonds among classmates. As orientation week concluded, students were ready for the next leg of their YU journey. READ MORE

YU Shabbatonim YU’s undergraduate programs hosted two of their largest off-campus Shabbatonim on September 8–10, Shabbat Nitzavim-Vayeilech. President Ari Berman , 275 Wilf Campus students, and over 15 rebbeim from YU’s Undergraduate Torah Studies (UTS) gathered at Camp Romimu in Monticello, New York, for an Elul Shabbaton, siyum, and Selichot. The Shabbaton featured a festive Friday night tish, seven panel discussions

and an interview with President Berman. Among the featured speakers was Dr. Noam Wasserman , Dean of the Sy Syms School of Business, who completed a Siyum HaShas, focusing on the teachings of Rav Yochanan Ben Zakkai and his Torah U’Business approach to ethical business values. Stern College held its off-campus Shabbaton at Camp Dora Golding in the Poconos. Joining more than 200 Stern students were Shoshana Schechter , Associate Dean of Torah Studies

and Spiritual Life, Beren Campus Rabbis and Rebbetzins Azriel and Ellie Fine and Avrumi and Michal Schonbrun, Torah Studies faculty and other staff. The Shabbaton featured a festive Friday night oneg, five panel discussions and a pre-Shabbat shiur.

Cardozo Law Clinic Works to Secure Multimillion Dollar Settlement Detainees who endured a week of severe conditions at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center during a polar vortex in 2019 could receive up to $10 million in compensation in a lawsuit settlement. The tentative agreement is the outcome of efforts led by Katherine R. Rosenfeld of Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel, with invaluable support from Cardozo professors Betsy Ginsberg , founder and director of the Civil Rights Clinic and director of Clinical Education; Alex Reinert , Max Freund Professor of Litigation & Advocacy and director of the Center for Rights and Justice; and their students at the Civil Rights Clinic. Two New Cohorts of Undergraduate Scholars Announced The Straus Center has announced its seventh cohort of ten exceptional Straus Scholars, chosen from Yeshiva University’s incoming undergraduates. These students have demon- strated outstanding academic achievement, leadership and a deep commitment to studying Jewish and Western traditions. As part of their program, they will engage in a unique interdisciplinary curriculum that connects Torah with key works in art, literature, philosophy and political science. Prestigious Fellowship Goes to Katz Student

Manish Kumar Thota is an intern at S&P Global in New York where he is a machine learning engineer. But that’s not all. Thota is also a student in the Katz School’s M.S. in Artificial Intelligence, and a recent recipient of YU’s Sacks Impact Graduate Fellowship in Ethics and Entrepreneurship for his proposed work on developing a machine- learning chat robot that can assist with

Comedy and Camaraderie On Sept. 7, YU’s Young Alumni enjoyed a night of food, laughter and fun at StandUp NY, one of the city’s top comedy clubs. Dovie Neuburger hosted the evening, with notable comedians Eli Lebowicz and Talia Reese gracing the stage. This event marks the first in a series of programs organized by YU’s Young Alumni Council for the academic year. READ MORE CLE Credit for YU Alumni Attorneys Alumni Affairs, the Shevet Glaubach Center and Cardozo Law School are joining forces to assist YU alumni attorneys meet the new CLE data privacy and cybersecurity require- ment for the New York State Bar. This one- hour event on Oct. 18, from noon to 1 p.m., welcomes all YU alumni attorneys who attended YU for undergrad or graduate school. Leading the course is Cardozo School of Law alumna Olivia J. YU Night at Yankee Stadium On Wednesday, Aug. 23, over 450 YU students, alumni, staff and friends gathered at Yankee Stadium to watch the NY Yankees break their nine-game losing streak with a 9-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. In the stands were President Ari Berman and YU student leaders, who with hundreds of others witnessed NY Yankee Aaron Judge hit three home runs, including an impressive grand slam. The event was organized by the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Office of Student Life.

Business Leader David Chubak Comes to Sy Syms

New Faculty at YU Forward-thinking, award-winning and dedicated: all are adjectives defining YU’s distinguished faculty. To that group YU is excited to welcome over 25 dynamic new faculty members—both undergraduate and graduate—for the 2023–2024 academic year. Among them is Dr. Honggang Wang , a renowned expert in artificial intelligence, digital health, 5G/6G communications, and cybersecurity, who will serve as founding chair of Computer Science and Engineering at the Katz School. The Sy Syms School of Business proudly welcomes David Chubak , currently the Head of Wealth Management at Edward Jones, as the new Chair of the Board of Overseers. Known for his transformative leadership in the business world, Chubak is set to guide Sy Syms towards a new era of excellence, building upon its recent successes. These achievements include record enrollment and an impressive post- graduation success rate, with over 97% of Sy Syms students securing employment or pursuing graduate education within six months of graduation. Faculty Research Awards Katz School of Science and Health has announced 11 new faculty research awards aimed at tackling diverse challenges in STEM and health sciences. These projects encompass the development of safer HIV treatment drugs, stroke rehabilitation exoskeletons, enhancements in elderly mental health and an exploration of financial crises. Katz School faculty will engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with industry and academic partners, including Stern College and Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. READ MORE

Counseling Center Staff Move Up YU’s Counseling Center is announcing new roles for two of its long-standing staff members, effective this fall. Dr. Didi Levy , who has been with the Counseling Center since 2019, is taking on the role of assistant director for the

Wilf Campus Center. Meanwhile, Dr. Debra Alper , who has worked as a therapist and supervisor for seven years at the Beren Campus location, will now serve as assistant director there. Dr. Martin Galla , the Center’s longtime associate director, is bidding farewell to YU as he pursues other opportunities at the beginning of the new semester. READ MORE
