SASE Spotlight Ivy Tech Indianapolis Fall 2023 (1) | SASE Quarterly Newsletter

School of Arts, Sciences & Education

A Note from the Dean: Dear colleagues,

At our SASE Fall kick-off I asked for your thoughts on why we require students to take general education courses in all degree programs and many certificate programs. You jumped at the opportunity to explain how these classes help our students become better employees and employers, parents and partners, citizens and community members. As we move forward in the semester I’d like to remind you of the importance of making students aware of the value of these courses. The core competencies for general education are the foundational intellectual skills—written communication, speaking and listening, and quantitative reasoning; and the “ways of knowing”—scientific ways of knowing, social and behavioral ways of knowing, and humanistic and artistic ways of knowing. General education courses strengthen our appreciation of art and literature, provide a deeper understanding of the social, political, mathematical and natural world, and enable us to communicate with clarity, precision, and logic. As GenEd faculty, you are charged with an awesome responsibility. The knowledge and skills students develop through general education courses not only make them more employable, but more well-rounded and thoughtful human beings. Part of our job is to illuminaate that benefit for students by being explicit about the value of education broadly, as well as the depth and breadth of knowledge they are acquiring. Take the time to help your students understand how they are enhancing their value through the study of your discipline. For some empirical evidence on additional benefits of higher education, check out this article from Inside Higher Ed (yes, the causation vs. correlation issue is noted in the article). Cheers, Sara

The event will be on Saturday, November 4 th at Garfield Park Art Center. “Butterflies and bees pollinate our gardens and gift us with a harvest to use all winter. But, where do bees go? How do flowers prepare for the return of spring? What can we do to sustain and and nourish ourselves and our friends, the pollinators? Guests will explore interactive activities at Garfield Park Arts Center (GPAC) including art making, creative writing, food preparation and more.”

Did you know that Indiana had over 120 drive-in move theaters in the 1950s? One of my best summer memories is seeing movies in the 1970s at one of many drive-ins around the Indianapolis area. My favorite was on Shadeland Avenue because it had a carousel on its playground. Today, there are currently only 20 drives-ins open in Indiana, but we are still the 5th state with the most drive-ins. You can find a list of currently operating drive-ins here .

A Note from the Editor:

Hello, everyone! I can’t believe I’ve been here for almost six months, now! Some days have been harder than others and - listen, I know it’s cheesy, but I’m really so lucky to work alongside such amazing, intelligent, and caring people. The support I’ve received in this role, as well as the support I see you all lend to others, is incredibly heartwarming. Sara may say I’m just flattering her, but I’m also grateful to have such a kind and inspiring woman as our Dean. Being surrounded by people as great as each and every one of you makes it very easy to be good at my job. Okay, I can put the cheese away, now! There are some fun up-and-coming projects on the horizon, such as new office signs, classroom management, and a directory update. I know they’re small projects, but nevertheless I hope you’ll be excited for the outcome. As always, thank you so much for reading this edition of the newsletter and for supporting the School of Arts, Sciences & Education here at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. Please look forward to the next edition!
