Asked what financial planning is, Chris Phillips likes to compare one’s working and saving years to climbing Mt. Everest. Going up isn’t necessarily that hard, he says. If you stumble a bit—if your savings take a hit—you just keep climbing, keep working and saving. Where most problems on Everest happen is on the way down—if you trip after retirement when there’s no more income to make it back, it may be a faster-than-intended descent.
