30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships
Sidestory Kyrgizstan Askarbek Zhumagulov
By invitation by IDO-Kyrgyzstan, Mrs. Oksana Polianichko, my wife Christa and I accompanied the IDO- Vice President and President of the All Russian Dance Organization (ARDO), Mr. Andrej Kokoulin, to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan . Aming several other people Oksana introduced us to a very nice gentlemen, a retired military officer and well know photographer in Bishkek, Mr. Askarbek Zhumagulov - a tap dancer. Mr. Zhumagulov loved tap dance but there was nobody who could teach him. So he learned it by himself and also taught his grand- son, Suleiman. We were very impressed and I invited him to compete in Riesa - in the adult category. When he came to Riesa the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan in Berlin contacted us for detailed information. “Everybody” in Kyrgyzstan knew he was competing at the IDO World Tap dance Championships in Riesa in November 2014. Mr. Zhumagulov did not speak one word in English. Our thanks also to Mrs. Swetlana Lorenz from Germany who was born in Kazachzstan and left home when she was a young girl, but still speaking Russian fluently. Swetlana helped our guests and us with the Russian language excellent and friendly. Before Askarbek Zhumagulov competed in his Kyrgyzstan national outfit in the first round I explained the circumstances and after his pe rformance the audience gave him a Standing Ovation. Please see the typical hat, called “ Ak-kalpak ” . It is a white felt hat that is traditionally worn by Kyrgyz men.
