HISTORY OF IDO WORLD TAP DANCE

30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships

Great Supporters from “North Ame rica”

Team Canada Dance and IDO 16 In the mid 90’s the Canadian National Tap Team was formed to compete at the IDO World Tap Championships in Dresden, Germany. Unforgettable and talented Matthew Clark was our choreographer, and is still supporting Team Canada today. Canada had 14 dancers that came from 5 different Canadian time zones for rehearsals. At that time, all performances came from studios/clubs, Canada was the first organization to come as a National Team, which started a trend throughout other countries. Since our first time attending in Dresden, Canada has never missed a year (with the exception of Pandemic year 2020) in sending multiple formations and performers. What started out as one formation has grown into Team Canada Dance with as many as 6 - 8 formations per Tap Championship. People are still drawn to the energy of it all and still get excited when they see tap incorporated into current dance performances. A warm thank you to Michael Wendt for your wonderful contribution to the growth and popularity of tap worldwide Bonnie Dyer ADA The “ American Dance Awards ” (ADA) - first run by Mr. Rhee Gold and Mrs. Gloria-Jean Cuming and later by Gloria Jean and her husband Mr. Tony Cuming - supported the IDO World Tap dance Championships for so many successful years with outstanding US- tap dancers qualified at ADA nationals. It was always more than a pleasure to see the highly skilled performers from North America to dance and I dreamt on bringing this talent to our IDO World Tap dance Championships. Headliners During the last IDO World Tap dance Championships in Dresden Mrs. Shari Tomasiello from the USA visited us to find out about the IDO World Tap dance Championships. Bill Fowler made the contact. This was the very beginning of a truly friendly and great collaboration with one of USA’s most famous Performing Arts Championships, “Headliners” successfully run by Mrs. Irma Ziegler and her daughter Shari Tomasiello. In the following years “Headliners” organized many qualifying competitions in the US for the IDO World Tap dance Championships.

I have been invited visiting both events many times and could help to bring qualified US tap dancers at its best to the IDO World Tap dance Championships in all the years.

I also met Mrs. Nancy Chippendale , her husband Bob Carberry and their three most beautiful daughters, Karen , Kelli and Krissy at Headliners National Championships in Providence, USA in 2002. In 2004 we also met at ADA’s nationals in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, USA. I invited them to the IDO World Tap dance Championships in Riesa. This was the ignition for Nancy, her family and team taking care of all US- American Tap dancers to compete in Riesa, Germany - and later also for other IDO Performing Arts Competitions. In 2016 Nancy has been elected “ Chairperson of the IDO Tap dance Committee ” - a great tap expert and friend - and is helping us to improve running the event. When Bill Fowler had to leave us for ever, Nancy became our true advisor - neutrally and positive to everybody - just caring for a sportive fair and excellent world tap dance event.
