30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships
Jack Egan / Melbourne VIC - Australia Teacher | Choreographer | IDO Judge 51
When I think of the IDO World Tap Championships, there are many great memories that pop into my mind. But what sticks out the most are the friendships and interactions that I was lucky enough to be involved with after making the epic 30+ hour journey to Riesa, Germany. Michael Wendt is most definitely at the centre of the positivity and passion that the competition is built upon. His generosity and caring is positively infectious which makes everyone want to be involved in such a great competition.
Early into my first arrival of the IDO World Tap Championships, as a young coach and Mock-Judge I enjoyed meeting people from across the world known at the IDO Tap Family where everyone was very inclusive and encouraging. Within a few days, I found myself in many tap jam circles with many different nations. We may not have always spoken the same language, but we expressed ourselves in a language that we were all knowledgeable and fluent in: Tap Dance. This sparked the coming together of all nations, creating an event much sought after called “The Battle of the Feet” where students and coaches alike could compete in a less structured and ver y exciting competition, showing off the skills of improvisation and rhythm. The professionalism of the competition, especially the final events always left me invigorated to motivate my students back in Australia each year I returned. I owe my thanks to the competitions and officials for being able to travel and experience the wonderful event that is the IDO World Tap Championships in Riesa and look forward to being involved again wherever possible.
