HISTORY OF IDO WORLD TAP DANCE

30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships

Kelly Sloan Egan / Hunter Valley NSW - Australia Teacher | Choreographer | IDO Judge

I am Kelly Sloan Egan, a Tap Dancer/Teacher from the Hunter Valley, Australia who shares a deep love for the Tap Dance art form. After my professional performances in my younger years, I followed my dream of opening my own Dance Studio. Now in my 20th year of owning the studio, I have produced dancers who have gone on to have careers in the Musical Theatre and Dance Industry, along with some very clever tap dancers who lead me to find Michael Wendt and the World Tap Dance Championships in Riesa. 2016 was my first trip to Riesa, and the World Tap Dance Championships

representing Team Australia. My eyes were certainly opened wide by the enormous talent on hand, and the professionalism of the event. The moment I stepped foot in the arena, I knew that this event and the IDO is something I wished to be a part of. The only difficulty in our connection to the Tap World Championships, is the 24hr+ each way travel time and the extreme expense for families to reach literally the other side of the world, to compete in what I believe to be the best competition in the world. Where there is a will, there is a way! I later sought my Judging qualifications for both Tap and Showdance in Korea, and was a Judge in the World Tap Dance Champi onships in 2018. Working alongside some of Australia’s best choreographers, I and Team Australia will be returning to the event for the first- time post ‘Covid’ this coming September 2023. IDO World Tap Dance Championships has really connected our amazing country with other people who share such a strong passion for Tap Dance. It offers another form of education and opens the tap mind, inspiring new styles and cultures. The Australian Team is hugely grateful for the opportunities IDO continues to give our ‘ Dancers Down Under’.
