HISTORY OF IDO WORLD TAP DANCE

30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships

Olivia & Rebecca Grobéty / Switzerland Dancer | Teacher | Choreographer

We have danced in the IDO World Tap Dance Championships every year since 2001. After going to Riesa for the first time we fell in love with the atmosphere and the magic of the event. For two sisters from a small village in Switzerland, going into that huge arena with so many dancers from different countries felt almost unreal! The level of the competition and the talent was so inspiring and we met competitors and teachers who pushed us into becoming better dancers. We have so many amazing memories in

Riesa; winning our first gold medal in the children duos all the way back in 2003, dancing in Fabrice Martin’s crazy small groups and making the arena laugh, being part of the Swiss national tap team productions as dancers and later as choreographers, dancing the Macarena on stage during the presentation of the nations, and being greeted by Bill Fowler’s legendary “Break a leg!” - it’s hard to pick a favourite! There is however one special highlight, and that’s when we won the gold medal in the adult duos in 2016 . As a female duo we were extremely proud of this achievement, because it can be very difficult to compete with the boys and mixed duets. Being on the top of that podium is a goal that we had wanted to achieve for many years and a happy and emotional memory that we will cherish forever. Coming to Riesa has had a massive impact on our lives. Not only did it inspire and help us to become better dancers, it has also changed our careers as tap dance teachers. The students that we brought to Riesa to compete fell in love with tap dance, the World Championships and the whole spirit of the event. Thanks to this, they practiced so hard to improve and became amazing tap dancers. Today we have a group of passionate students who loves to tap dance and train together and is getting bigger and bigger every year. Riesa definitely had a huge role in this and we will always be thankful for everything it has given us. It holds a special place in our hearts and we can’t wait to be back for the next one and hopefully many more to come!
