HISTORY OF IDO WORLD TAP DANCE

30 years of IDO World Tap dance Championships

Sona Ovsepian, Moscow - Russia Dancer | Teacher | Choreographer | Team Captain | IDO Judge

The interview was possible with the great support of Sona’s professional dancer Kate Chushnyakova as Russian-English-Russian interpreter, and whom we know and like from Riesa since she was competing as a child. Sona Ovsepian was born in Armenia, which was part of the Soviet Union at that time. Her family and she moved to Moscow and it was her mother’s dr eam that she should learn to tap dance. She attended a tap dance studio and never stopped learning and performing tap dance. She went to university and in 2007 she opened her own studio

“SonaDance Theatre” in Moscow, Russia.

Today Sona is specialized on professional tap dance shows with her dancers to perform very successfully in tv-shows, in theatres and other places. Her dancers now are all professionals - and some have additional jobs. In 2009 Sona attended the IDO World Tap dance Championships for the first time with a junior duo which received a bronze medal. What a great start. During the years Sona came to Riesa accompanying her young dancers, as children, then in the junior age group and as well as adults. Today they are professionals in her Theatre. Sona also served as an IDO licensed judge in Riesa many times. For Sona and her dancers “Riesa” once a year is the most important event. They are working for it the whole year and waiting it will take place. It brings them energy and this wonderful communication with so many excellent dancers from all over the world. Currently Sona Ovsepian is working on online with American teachers where the US American Consul in Moscow has thankfully supported her. She will do her best to help developing tap dance in Russia - where this form of dance culture is growing.
