Did you know? Glass can take anywhere from 4000 years to a million years to decompose, depending on both the thickness of the glass and its environment. But it is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. According to The European Container Glass Federation, the latest industry data on glass recycling show that the average glass recycling rate in the EU28 is steady at 74%. This means that over 11.6 million tons of glass bottles are collected, and recycled into food grade quality material for the production of new glass containers.
Glass is made from readily-available domestic materials and recycled glass is always part of the recipe for new glass. The higher the proportion of recycled glass, the greater the energy savings: for every 10% of recycled glass that is used, 3% of the energy and 7% of the CO 2 emissions are saved.
Countries such as Belgium, Slovenia or Sweden, with excellent separate collection systems, continue to outperform beyond 95%, but the reality is that there is still an important collection gap to fill in many EU countries. (Press release - April 2018 )
