There’salotofpresureontheidea ofatraditionalsystem—getyour degreeandgetthebestjobyou couldwant—butthat’sjustnot accurateanymore.Inreality, obtainingadegreeisthestarting point.Oldergenerationsmaysee milennialscomingoutofthisstage intheirlifeandthinkthey’rejust lazyornottryinghardenough whenthey’reunabletogetthat job.However, whenIseethe milennialagegroup, Ithinkback towhenIwasinmy20s, and they’reactingthesamewayIdid. It’simportantforpeoplefreshfrom colegetoknowthey’veonlyjust crosedthestartingline, andthat’s notabadthing.Getingthatentry- leveljobmightnotbewhatyouhad planned, butitwilhelpyouout pretysignificantlyinthelongrun. Iwouldencourageanyoneand everyoneinthisstageoftheircareer toseekoutasmuchexperience asposible.Findthosebootcamps andstaycurentwithtechnological advances.Youwon’tgetwhereyou wanttogounlesyou’veputinthe eforttogetthatexperienceinthe firstplace.Neverstoplearningand alwaysbeteachable.

Lawyersneedtostudylawtopas thebarexam, accountantsneedto understandtheinnerworkings ofthefinancialfield, and paleontologistsneedtoknow thehistoryofdinosaursbefore theystartdiggingthingsup. But technologyisthecompleteopposite. Peoplewhowanttobecomemore involvedinthetechindustryneed toacceleratetheircareerbyother meansasidefromadegree. Bootcampprograms, whichare typicalyacoupleweekslong, are intensestudycoursesthatfocus onasinglesubject. Now, I’mnottryingtosaythata degreeisn’tworthanything;infact, I’mtryingtosayquitetheopposite. Manywhoarejustnowgeting involvedinthetechnologyindustry arerealizingthediferencebetween havingadegreeandexperience. Recently, aclientofminecameup tomeandtoldmeabouttheirson whohadjustgraduatedfrom colegewithamaster’sdegreein cybersecurity.Myclientwas concernedbecause, eventhough hissonhadplentyofknowledge inthefield, “He’shavingarealhard timefindingajob, Rick.” Thesadtruthbehinditisthathis sondidn’thaveanyexperiencein thatarea.Whensomeonecomes outofcolegewithamaster’s degreeinanytypeoffield, they areimmediatelyregardedas wantingahighersalarywithout theexperiencetomatchit.
