JANEY LEE GRACE - THE SOBER CLUB

Career

Has your profession changed since you got sober? Tell me about your business and what you hope to achieve for women in recovery? There is always an element of coaching in HR and Recruitment and it’s the part of my old job that I loved. I like say I’m a Sober Living Life Coach, because I work with women not only to kick the drink and stay sober, but I also help them to keep moving forward and create a life filled with clarity, energy and passion. What does coaching- program-etc look like and what do you offer? Finding You Coaching is where women find help and support to stop using alcohol as a crutch to get them through their day. The coaching focuses on Energy, Clarity, and Purpose & Passion. I believe a combination of being alcohol free, understanding self-love and finding what you are truly passionate about really underpins our complete wellbeing. I offer 1-1 coaching as well as group workshops that focus on Self-Love and finding your Passions in life. What does the future hold for you? The sky’s the limit, right? I’ll have launched my online program and I’ll still be working 1-1, because I love that deep connection with clients. I’m also believing in a future where (before prescribing anti- depressants) GP’s are talking to women, (who have been questioning their relationship with alcohol for years but had nowhere to turn) about the truth of alcohol and sign-posting them to coaches who understand and can help them on this journey. What is your favourite quote in the sober world I’m more successful than I’ve ever been, I feel very positive where I never did before, and I think that’s all a direct result of me getting sober. What are your sober rituals daily? Rituals are like superpowers! I have a Self-Love ritual in the morning that includes a mantra and mudra combination that keeps me balanced and in alignment with my commitment to sobriety. Do you have a home team (community) in sobriety? Of course! The Sober Club is like family, we always have one another’s backs. Have you found meditation, podcasts, or books helpful in recovery? Meditation comes and goes for me. I first heard about grey area drinking through a podcast and from there I inhaled all the quit lit I could get a hold of. Can you recommend your favourite podcast/book/ in sobriety? I loved Annie Grace’s podcast in the early days. I listen to Janey Lee Grace's podcast weekly and I’ve recently discovered The Sober Therapist SoberSoul Recovery Podcast with Lynn Matti. Quit Lit favs are William Porter, Catherine Gray, and of course Janey Lee Grace. What was the last sober book you read? I re-read my sober books a lot, so probably Janey’s although Cheryl Rickman’s “You are enough” seems to be helpful on this sober journey too. Do you have any sober heroes/heroines? There are so many, clients of course are all very inspiring. I have a family member who’s 5 months sober and has completely changed their life. They’re my hero. If there is someone reading this out there what would be your top sober tip for them? Keep visualising your life free from alcohol and then keep believing in yourself to make that picture a reality. You can do this!

What is your sober date? May 6th 2020 How long do you think you had a problem with alcohol before you took the decision to make the changes and do the work? Starting drinking at 14 was a problem (!) but didn’t think it was till about 10 years ago. What program did you use to reach freedom from alcohol? Twelve Steps or Modern Recovery? The AA approach didn’t make sense to me. I didn’t want to fight every day to stay dry, that didn’t sound like much fun, then I read about grey area drinking & I knew I’d found the right path for me. Professionally has your sober decision had any consequences? I’d just moved back to the UK after 23 years in Canada, so wasn’t “working”. I’ve now trained as a Life Coach, Sober Coach, and facilitator of a couple of powerful programs, started my own Life Coaching business, and at 55 I’m studying Psychology at Open University! Have you seen great changes within your relationships at home + work in sobriety? Sobriety brought me back to being my true self, which in itself makes relationships more meaningful. Not drinking doesn’t make life a garden of roses and unicorns, but I don’t get caught up in people’s drama these days. I lacked confidence in networking situations before. Now I go to events and proudly speak to people about being a Sober Coach and most are genuinely interested. If I notice someone standing nearby ‘listening in’ to what I’m saying, I make sure I talk a wee bit louder. A new beginning for Gillian Cockburn
