Mountain Highway and Albert Avenue Intersection Upgrade— $7.7m CIVIL AND TRAFFIC
The Mountain Highway and Albert Avenue Intersection upgrade is a Victorian Government project upgrading the Mountain Highway, Colchester Road, and Albert Avenue intersection in Boronia to a signalised intersection. It included replacing the existing roundabout with a signalised intersection, additional traffic lanes, new pedestrian crossings, asphalt resurfacing, and kerb and channel works. WGA was engaged to complete a detailed design package for the proposed works including roads, drainage, and signage design. WGA has since been able to contribute specialised knowledge in flood modelling, traffic signal design and directional sign face design to the project. The team completed signage and pavement marking arrangements, traffic signal design and directional sign face design (including development of the directional sign face strategy) for this project.
The key challenges encountered by the team related to minimising impacts to existing utility services to avoid the costs associated with relocation or protection of utilities and disruption to traffic during construction. This was compounded by the need to provide an underground drainage solution that not only avoided utilities, but also provided capacity redundancy to mitigate flooding and control afflux. To do this, WGA built a fully annotated 3D road, drainage and utility services model to provide confidence in the drainage solution with respect to clearances and impacts on utilities. This level of detail streamlined authority approval and allowed for making accurate constructibility decisions on site. WGA also built a utility services management matrix for DTP, which was critical to the successful management of the project and engagement with authorities.
