Our Experience—Transport
Streetscapes
Blending engineering with urban design, a well thought out streetscape can create a vibrant meeting place for the community. Our design experts consider the competing needs of pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and motorists to shape a safe and functional experience for all users. Detailed analysis and planning is the key to balancing traffic flow, green infrastructure, lighting for safety, and stormwater run off, all while ensuring an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
Charles Street Streetscape Upgrade— $5m CIVIL, ELECTRICAL, LIGHTING, PAVEMENTS, STORMWATER, AND STRUCTURAL
The Charles Street Upgrade Project, a joint funded project between the City of Adelaide Council and Precision Group (Adelaide City Plaza) was identified for upgrading to renew aging and deteriorating assets, enhance pedestrian safety/ connectivity, increase visual amenity and provide spaces for outdoor dining opportunities. The street, being an essential inner-city corridor, receives high numbers of pedestrian traffic daily, with the project aiming to heavily reduce vehicle access and increase pedestrian activation between Adelaide City shopping district and the North Terrace cultural and educational precincts. The project set out to produce a kerb-less street environment, prioritising pedestrian movements and business access/ activation. This was achieved through the implementation of increased lighting levels with night/day modes, increased street greening, seamless stormwater management using trench drainage, and high quality locally sourced stone pavements. WGA was at the front of both the design and construction of the project, encountering numerous challenges throughout the development of this inner-city streetscape design. Working closely with an experienced team of City of Adelaide managers, architects and contractors these challenges were able to be overcome including working within service authority boundaries, clashes with underground infrastructure, business accessibility and project interfacing with the major CBD corridors at either end of the project. The construction phase of the project was completed and opened to the public in early 2025 with significant positive feedback received on achieving a vibrant public space which encourages local business interaction whilst enhancing the interconnectivity between major landmarks with Adelaide’s CBD.
Market Street to Riverbank Upgrade— $15m CIVIL, LIGHTING AND STRUCTURAL
The Market to Riverbank Link is a key City of Adelaide/Renewal SA infrastructure project linking the Riverbank and Adelaide Railway Station to the Market District. For the small streets and lane ways that connect the two precincts, this upgrade provided a vibrant, pedestrian and cyclist friendly setting, with more outdoor dining, cafés and small bars. WGA worked with the City of Adelaide Urban Design team to provide civil, structural and lighting engineering services for the Bank Street and Topham Mall stage of this project. Bringing our experience of working within highly developed areas, WGA navigated the detailed design process through the ever present and large number of existing services that are common in a precinct of this nature. The design phase was delivered in a compressed time frame, whilst achieving the desired outcomes set by Council and the key stakeholders.
Throughout the construction phase, WGA undertook superintendency services and design input to ensure smooth delivery for Council from concept to completion.
A key element of the project was robust lighting design and electrical engineering to the arbor structure at Topham Mall. Downlights were designed to provide an even wash of colour over the space, using the minimal number of luminaries. The latest technology in programming, the system runs DMX programming from a centralised location and is programmed to run colour changing RGB. Our team was awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society's 2019 Award of Excellence for the lighting design on the Topham North Upgrade.
