PuttingAll the PiecesTogether

S tretch Physical Therapy is always growing and constantly evolving to provide our patients with all the tools they need to live healthy, pain-free lives without the need for injections, medications, or surgery. In the past few months, I’ve written plenty about all the wonderful new personnel we’ve been fortunate to add to our team and all the incredible benefits this expansion unlocks for our patients. But as we close out the summer, we not only have another talented, compassionate individual joining on, but a brand-new slate of programs to offer! With Mija Speakman as our new wellness coordinator, we’ll be able to guide our patients to holistic, long-term health while drawing on elements that are traditionally outside the scope of physical therapy treatment, such as nutrition, supplements, stress management, yoga, and everyday exercise. Now we can create a comprehensive wellness plan for patients of all stripes, whether they are injured or simply need a little guidance to achieve long-lasting health and fitness. With this move, it feels like we’re able to close the loop for our patients, putting all the pieces together into a cohesive whole that will really achieve fantastic things for those we serve. Sure, physical therapy will remain a central focus of the clinic, but if you have concerns other than injuries or nagging pain, we can help you with those too! When it comes to your health, there is so much information out in the world that it can be paralyzing. I can’t count the number of patients I’ve seen who are afraid of taking that first step toward true, long-term health because they’re overwhelmed “To put it simply, we want each of our patients to understand what their body is telling them and what they can do in response in order to maximize long-term health.” How Our New Wellness Program Provides Holistic Health

by conflicting data or fearful of injuring themselves by taking the wrong approach. Which exercises will optimize your flexibility and strength? How do I get the nutrients I need to feel better and live longer? How can I stave off injury for the long term? Mija and the rest of the team are eager to answer these pressing questions and will provide lots of resources to get you where you’ve always dreamed of going. To put it simply, we want each of our patients to understand what their body is telling them and what they can do in response in order to maximize long-term health. While we certainly are eager to coach our patients back to health, our end goal is to empower them with knowledge that will keep them healthy on their own for years to come. Maybe that means continued maintenance visits with our therapists to prevent arthritis from resurfacing after physical therapy treatment, or maybe it means a realistic diet plan that will keep diabetes under control and ensure you continue to feel great. But whatever the issue is, we’re here to help, with a huge variety of programs in place to not only curb pain, but to help you feel better than you ever have in your life. It’s the realization of a vision I’ve had ever since I imagined starting Stretch Physical Therapy, years ago.

Protect Your Children During Their Commute With the school year fast approaching, families are in preparation mode. Parents are busy buying new clothes and school supplies and thinking about the best way to get their kids safely to school. Keeping your child safe on their commute starts with knowing the transportation method that works best for you and the rules that accompany that method. Transportation Safety Tips

of the road. All children should practice road safety behavior, such as riding on the right side of the road, wearing helmets, stopping at stop signs, and watching out for cars. Internalizing these habits will help them stay aware of their surroundings when traveling to and from school. Sharing the Road When school starts, the roads become even more cluttered than usual. On top of people heading to work, there are large buses making frequent stops, parents rushing to drop their kids off, and young kids biking or walking to school. With the added tension on the road, it’s important to be alert and move cautiously. Slowing down in school zones or around young pedestrians will keep you vigilant and could potentially save lives.

Taking the School Bus According to the United States Department of Transportation, the school bus is the safest means of transportation to and from school. Buses are built to withstand a hit and distribute the damage throughout the vehicle, keeping its passengers safe and sound. Knowing basic bus safety will help kids be mindful when taking the bus. Before the school year starts, take your children to the bus stop and show them where they should stand when the bus approaches — a minimum of three large steps or 6 feet from the street. Tell your kids about the importance of sitting still and not standing in the bus while it’s in motion. Young Pedestrians on the Road Whether your child is biking, walking, or even skateboarding, it’s vital that they know and follow the rules

Teach your kids to be prepared and safe on the road to ensure that they have a healthy and safe school year.

Testimonial OUR PATIENTS SAY IT BEST

“I’m a gymnast and had very bad back pain to the point where it hurt to stand up and go up and down the stairs. I had to stop practicing because it put so much strain on my back. When I started at Stretch, I was very weak and there were a lot of things that hurt. Through the process of strengthening exercises at Stretch and at home, my pain gradually started to lessen. By the end, I had no pain and am now allowed to start going back to practice and gradually add back in the skills I could once do so easily.”

Meet Mija Speakman! Our NewWellness Coordinator

As Kim Nartker mentioned in this month’s cover story, we’ve been on the lookout for a skilled wellness coach to add to the Stretch Physical Therapy team. It’s always been our vision to provide our patients not only with the best physical therapy in the area, but all the resources our patients need to thrive and live long, healthy, pain-free lives. And with Wellness Coordinator Mija Speakman joining the team this past June, we’ve found the perfect person to do just that. Mija is a certified Wellness Coach and yoga instructor, with an extensive background in health education and promotion. She’s been passionate about health and wellness since she was young, so when she packed up and shipped off to college, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to learn how to share the bounty of long-term health with others. Before joining us at Stretch, Mija worked for over four years in the wellness department of a hospital. She loved working with patients but struggled against the traditional medical paradigm. “It just didn’t feel like real wellness was valued there,” she says. “It’s hard to implement anything when you’re working with 5,000 people.”

Though she’s only in her second month here, she’s already had a tremendous impact on the well-being of the people she serves. “I really love seeing people’s ‘Aha!’ moments,” she says. “When a patient realizes they can confidently do something for their own health and sees the results they’ve been trying to achieve for a long time, then I know I’ve done my job — and that their healthy changes are going to stick.” Outside of the clinic, Mija loves to do yoga and spend as much time in the outdoors as possible. Recently, she’s gotten into rock climbing, and she’s steadily overcoming the steep learning curve of the sport.

If you’re looking to achieve holistic, long-term wellness — even if you’re not injured or struggling with pain — you couldn’t find a better guide than Mija Speakman. We’re so grateful to have her on the team and excited to watch as she guides hundreds of patients toward lasting health in the years to come!

Now, she uses her experience in yoga, stress management, supplements, nutrition, and exercise to transform patients’ lives at Stretch Physical Therapy.

HAVE A LAUGH

Grilled Leg of Lamb

This recipe is the perfect centerpiece for a late summer cookout or an easy family dinner.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, minced

1 4–5-pound boneless leg of lamb, not butterflied

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

8 cloves garlic, smashed and coarsely chopped

Directions

3.

Heat grill to medium-high. Season lamb with salt and pepper and grill until lamb reaches an internal temperature of 130 F (medium rare). Cook time will vary depending on size of lamb pieces. Let lamb rest, covered with tin foil, for 15 minutes. Slice thinly and serve.

1.

On a large cutting board, cut between the muscles on the leg of lamb to divide into 4 pieces, pulling apart with your fingers if need be. In a mixing bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, and rosemary. Add lamb and toss to coat. Marinate for 4 hours at room temperature.

Safe SailingThis Hurricane Season

Safe Sailing This Hurricane Season Book a Caribbean Cruise

Flexibility Is a Must

After last year’s devastating storm season, would-be tropical travelers are undoubtedly hesitant about purchasing those discounted plane tickets to the Caribbean Basin. No one wants to face a possible evacuation during their vacation — or worse, be forced to weather a hurricane at a beachfront resort. If you want the most bang for your buck while enjoying the turquoise waters of the Caribbean this fall, consider booking a cruise. Cruise-ship travel is a fun and adventurous way to explore any time of year. After all, what could be more magical than a floating hotel room where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another? This charming mobility is also what makes cruise travel the safest option for visiting the Caribbean and the coast of Mexico this time of year. Safety and Savings Much like resorts and airfare, cruise lines discount their Caribbean fares significantly during peak hurricane season, from August to October. However, unlike a traditional hotel, these massive ships have the luxury of navigating out of a storm’s path with ease. For all their ferocity, hurricanes move slowly across the Atlantic and have relatively predictable trajectories. Meanwhile, modern cruise ships carry the most sophisticated weather-tracking instruments, allowing them to bypass even small storms and inclement weather.

The flipside of this ability to

dodge storms is the fact that your

ship may not be able to stick to its original itinerary. You may have to anchor at an island you weren’t expecting to or miss out on seeing a

port you were supposed to visit. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific location, cruise travel this time of year may not be for you. But if you are simply looking for a safe, affordable vacation to a beautiful region, then it doesn’t much matter which white-sanded beach you wake up to next. While unpredictable weather will always be a concern for any vacation, the safety and variety cruises offer make them great options for anyone looking for a Caribbean getaway before the holiday season. So if you have a flexible schedule and a healthy sense of adventure, it’s time to call your travel agent, pack your sunscreen and bathing suit, and head to paradise!
