Designing An Employee Benefits Package To Retain ‘A Players’ BY PHILLIP M. PERRY Employers are retooling their benefits to meet the needs of a new work- force. The goal is to attract, motivate and retain top quality employees. “It used to be that health insurance and a retirement savings plan were all a company needed,” said Lauren Winans, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Consultant at Next Level Benefits. “Times have changed. Today’s younger employees want benefits that help them achieve work-life balance and prepare for the future.” What’s driving the change? Two important forces are the ubiquity of two-income families and the need for intergenerational care. These have led to an increase in the prevalence of childcare subsidies, care- giver support, and flexible time off.

WestRock Signs Build-To-Suit Lease For New Facility In WI Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin based Dermody Properties, a diversified private equity in- vestment management company focused on the national logistics real estate sector, an- nounced that WestRock has signed a build- to-suit lease at LogistiCenter at Pleasant Prai- rie. WestRock is establishing a Great Lakes regional corrugated operations hub and will require more than 580,000 square feet within Wisconsin’s newest rail-served logistics park. “We are pleased that WestRock is entrust- ing Dermody Properties to build its advanced manufacturing facility in southeast Wiscon- sin,” said Neal Driscoll, Midwest Region Part- ner at Dermody Properties. “We could not have scripted a better partner to kick off the park, and we look forward to working close- ly with WestRock and the Village of Pleasant Prairie to complete what we believe will be a best-in-class project.” The Village of Pleasant Prairie sits at the southern doorstep of Wisconsin and has wit- nessed considerable expansion in the past decade as local companies have grown. “The biggest trend I have seen recently is toward offering paid pa- rental leave,” said Mark Stratton Berry, Senior Human Resource Spe- cialist at Insperity. Mental health coverage is also on the upswing, as younger people express a heightened sensitivity to the importance of psychological well-being. Employers, for their part, are starting to realize that stressed workers find it difficult to be fully engaged and are likely to have high absenteeism records. Offering just the right benefits mix can enhance performance throughout the workplace, raising profitability. “Providing benefits helps keep your employees well, physically and mentally,” said Julie CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Apex Int’l Invests In Schepers Laser Engraving Technology

Hapert, The Netherlands Apex International announced at drupa 2024 the acquisition of the new Schepers Digi- las5000, expanding the company’s capabilities to supply its customers with embossing rollers that deliver high quality standards across a wide range of end products. “The business for embossing is growing exponentially,” said Ruud Van Cuijk, CEO of Apex. “With this investment in the latest laser technology, we are able to drive our pene- tration in those new markets and meet the evolving needs of our customers around the world.” With a maximum roller diameter of 600mm, the new ma- chine is capable of engraving rollers that emboss material up to 3.4m in length.

Apex also continues to utilize its larger laser systems, capable of engraving up to 7 meters, ensuring comprehen- sive coverage for all customer needs. “It can also engrave material from copper to steel, en- suring we can meet any customer’s particular needs,” Van Cuijk said. “Embossing delivers a totally uniform pattern and with the incredible throughput speed afforded by such a large diameter roller it delivers huge efficiency gains to our customers.” Apex recently expanded its Hapert facility to accommo- date the new Schepers Digilas5000 and support the grow- ing demands in embossing and rotary screen production. “When choosing a partner for this venture we found Schepers to be a company that, like Apex, distinguishes it- self with its high-quality products. While it’s often difficult to find the optimum balance between speed, quality, and cost, it was heartening to find eye-level partners like Schepers who share our values and believe in delivering a high-qual- ity product with integrity and authenticity,” said Van Cuijk. Schepers CEO Carlo Schepers said he was thrilled to be working with Apex on the project. “The deal we have agreed here is a partnership,” he said. “We have the same goals and the same approach to business as Apex, and we see our future in anilox so this is a perfect example of how we can all benefit from working together.” From left, Ruud van Cuijk, CEO of Apex International, and Carlo Schepers, CEO of Schepers GmbH & Co.

PPC Celebrates Success Of TICCIT Program

The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), announced the success of its TICCIT (Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees) program, thanks to the dedication and commitment of its member companies across the country. The TICCIT program, which educates schoolchildren about the envi- ronmental benefits of recycling and trees, has reached new heights this year with unprecedented participation and impact. Created in 2010 by PPC, the TICCIT program is held at schools nationwide around Earth Day. After classroom learning sessions, students pot tree saplings into paper- board cartons filled with soil to take home and plant with their families.

Once planted, the paper cartons will naturally biode- grade, completing the “trees into cartons, cartons into trees” lifecycle. Over the last 14 years, the program has planted over 120,000 saplings. PPC members facilitated TICCIT programs to students in their local communities throughout the US this spring, inspiring stu- dents to create a more sustainable future.

TICCIT continues to thrive with the sup- port of PPC members nationwide, who en- gage with schools and local communities to plant trees and spread awareness about recycling. This year’s program has seen a record number of trees planted, and countless students have gained valuable insights into the lifecycle of trees and the sustainability of paperboard packaging. Eleven companies from across the United States participated in the program with Accord Carton, American Carton Company, Baumer hhs, Diamond Pack- aging, Graphic Packaging International, Malnove, Manchester Industries, Matik,Inc, Metsä Board, Pusterla US, Sappi, and WestRock. These companies collectively planted nearly 8,000 saplings. Over 7,000 students were involved in planting trees, showcasing the extensive reach and im- pact of the program. “The success of the TICCIT program is a testament to the dedication and commit- ment of our members,” said Emily Leon- czyk, Executive Director and Vice Presi- dent of the Paperboard Packaging Council. “Their support and active involvement have enabled us to educate thousands of young minds about the importance of sus- tainability and the critical role that paper- board packaging plays in protecting our environment. The collective impact of their work underscores the power of communi- ty and collaboration in driving positive en- vironmental change.” Teachers and administrators can gather all the resources needed for their school or youth organization at https://ticcit.info to participate in the program.

Dispelling The Myths Of Digital Corrugated Printing BY BEN GINESI

In recent years, the corrugated industry has experienced a surge in demand for short and medium runs of high impact packaging, driven by growth in sectors such as the thriving craft beer market, where new product development generates a virtually constant stream of box de- sign variations. As converters explore the prospect of investing in digital

printing equipment to keep up with demand and drive business growth, there are often miscon- ceptions about the economics and practicalities of running a digital printing process for corrugat- ed packaging – viewed through the lens of the conventional technologies converters are familiar with today Myth #1: Digital Is More Complex Than Tradi- tional Printing Methods Why does that myth exist? This primarily

comes from the beliefs held by converters who have experience and confidence working with traditional printing methods and processes. Flexographic printing (flexo) works well for high-volume, uncomplicated prints across a range of substrates. While lithographic printing (litho) has predominantly been used for high-quality prints with complex details. The fact that converters have printed in the same way in the corrugated industry for decades and are well versed in the process has led to the belief that the transition to digital will be difficult and burdensome – as may be expected when stepping away from the familiar and embracing a completely different process; but this is not necessarily the case. In theory, the digital printing process is simpler and shorter than both flexo and litho: you take the digital artwork, send it to the machine, and the machine prints it – which, if everything is set up correctly, is both far easier and more efficient than a traditional process with printing plates that require time-consuming mechanical setup. But just as with any oth- er piece of equipment, you need the right processes and people – ful- ly-trained people – to operate it. Myth #2: Digital Printing Consumables Are Too Expensive It is true that ink for digital presses can be more expensive than con- sumables for flexo or litho print, and many converters are in the mindset that the cost of ink per litre should be below a certain threshold for them to run a viable process. However, the cost of ink per litre can be a mis- leading indicator of the total running cost of digital printing equipment. Ink that may seem expensive at first glance often proves better val- ue at the bottom line, as better coverage of the substrate reduces ink consumption, lowering the cost per square metre of print. The need for primer as a consumable also feeds into the running cost, and inks that do not require pre-coating may deliver considerable savings. Once digital press users realise this, they can move from short and medium runs to longer runs, which increases the use of the press, and further enhances return on investment. Myth #3: Digital Presses Have A Large Footprint And Require A Spe- cialised Space Corrugate converters researching digital printing presses are often concerned about the size of the equipment and wonder if they have the space and resources to be able to create an environment in which CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

have when recruiting for a flexo press operator. An operator with decades of experience in running a flexo or litho printing press, with all the mechanical set-up that is required, will likely need time and specific training to adapt to the digital process – as would be expected from someone who has spent years doing things in a cer- tain way. The general ease of using a digital press, how- ever, will soon make controlling, setting up, and optimizing the digital printing process via a touchscreen interface second nature. Given the predominance of digital devices in everyday life, even someone without prior experience in the printing industry might have an easy time adapting to operating a digital press. Myth #5: The ROI For Any Digital Printing Process Is The Same While the general benefits of digital printing versus tra- ditional printing methods are well known and apply to any digital printing process, the same cannot be said for the return on investment (ROI). Converters should pay partic- ular attention to the total cost of ownership, as running costs can vary greatly across equipment available in the market. There’s a connection between how effectively the digital and mechanical elements of a press work togeth- er that translates across to the ROI. And, ultimately, that’s what a lot of people don’t realise. It’s not a one size fits all approach across brands and digital press models. Ben Ginesi is the European Sales Manager at Digital Cor- rugated Packaging at Domino.

to run a corrugated printing press. Some digital corrugat- ed presses have a larger footprint than their flexograph- ic counterparts and building a cleanroom to create the controlled environment needed to accommodate a digital press can take up a lot of additional space and investment. However, there are corrugated digital inkjet presses on the market that use fast-drying inks that only require compact drying modules, greatly reducing the overall foot- print. In addition, some presses also feature internal en- vironmental controls for temperature and dust extraction, eliminating the need for a cleanroom – which means you can effectively place the press alongside the traditional presses in your facility. Myth #4: Finding A Digital Press Operator Is Difficult In recent years, the skills and knowledge gap in the print industry – widening as experienced professionals are retiring – has often been named as one of the key challenges for converters. Viewed from this perspective, recruiting a press operator may seem daunting. However, once converters realize a digital press op- erator requires a completely different set of skills than a traditional printing professional, finding the right person becomes a lot easier. The fact that no technical know-how specific to the printing industry is required to run a digi- tal press means that converters benefit from access to a much wider pool of potential candidates than they would

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Stich, Vice President of Content at the International Foun- dation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP). “And that means they will be more productive.” Turnover, too, can be reduced when people are happy with their employer’s perks. “Managers need to under- stand the importance of benefits when it comes to em- ployee retention,” said Stich. “Replacing a top performer who leaves for greener pastures can take a real hit to the bottom line. The many costs begin with the need to post the job, and then proceed on with interviewing, onboard- ing, and training. And while the worker’s position remains vacant, other team members have to step in and do the necessary work, resulting in lower productivity.”

Treading Carefully Good intentions are one thing. Selecting the right pro- viders is another. That’s particularly the case with mental health coverage. “Many employers believe they are offer- ing psychological support benefits through their insurance carriers,” said Winans. “But the fact is that there are often insufficient counselors, therapists, psychologists, and psy- chiatrists to help all of the people in need.” Today’s Employee Assistance Plans (EAPs) often in- clude mental health services, typically providing lists of nearby doctors, therapists and psychologists but leaving the employees to track down appropriate providers. That task can be nerve-wracking in itself, adding to employee stress. And the scarcity of available professionals means obtaining help can take a long time. In response, noted Winans, many companies are utilizing new technologies in the form of free counseling apps, and memberships in private services that provide help with meditation or with connecting to counselors at convenient times. Employers may also sign up third-party intermediaries to proactively match employees with appropriate provid- ers, saving considerable time and energy. These services often work with whatever insurance company the employ- ee has and will even find free or low-cost services for peo- ple with no insurance. They may also follow-up to ensure

that employees connect with therapists who are helpful and appropriate. Unique Needs Every workforce is different. What employees want at one company may differ from what they want at another. “The benefits environment is not one-size-fits-all,” said Su- zanne Haslam, Senior Vice President at Woodruff Sawyer. “Employers should inventory their demographics and cus- tomize their benefits plans appropriately.” Haslam gives some examples: Younger Individuals: Consider family-forming coverage such as support for fertility, adoption, and surrogacy. Once these individuals have families, expand services to include lactation consulting, return to work support, and childcare services.

College Graduates: Potential benefits include debt consolidation services and financial wellness and home buying support. Middle Aged People: Do they need assistance in plan- ning for their child’s education? Is someone in a sandwich generation caring for both kids and parents? Would elder care services be appropriate? Older People: Women may be looking for menopause support services. Individuals approaching retirement may appreciate financial wellness and Medicare planning sup- port services. If demographics can affect the makeup of a benefits package, the fact remains that employers must satisfy some baseline requirements. “Comprehensive and afford- able health insurance coverage, retirement saving plans, and paid time off are considered basic requirements,” said Alicia Scott-Wears, Director of Total Rewards Content Strategy at consulting firm WorldatWork. Taking Surveys The variety of possible benefits is extensive, and as- sembling the right package can incur serious costs. Em- ployers can get the most bang for their buck by carefully selecting benefits that pull their weight. And that means going to end users for input. Surveys, conducted every year or two, can help. ployees should be approached with a statement such as this: “Are the company’s offerings meeting your needs? If not, we want to hear about it so we can make our bene- fits program more meaningful. That will make it worth your while to work here, and also make it worth our while from a dollars and cents perspective. As an employer, we don't want to spend money on benefits you’re not going to use.” Once survey results are in, take action. “Be sure to ac- knowledge employee input,” said Berry. “Let people know the survey findings in terms of what the company needs and what steps you will take as a result. Be transparent. Employees need to feel that they have a voice, that they have been heard and acknowledged.”

While surveys are the most effective channel to ferret out employee needs, companies can also solicit feedback from small work groups that dialog about benefits. Too, some sleuthing can fill in the gaps. “It’s important to find out what your competitors are offering,” said Berry. “That ties into recruiting and retention, as you want to make sure you’ve got what it takes to keep your best people from jumping ship.” Finally, employers can fine-tune company offerings by monitoring utilization. Providers can report on which ben- efits are being accessed and how often. “You might think that one benefit is the best one ever, and then discover that maybe only 10 percent of your employees signed up for it,” said Stich. “You might conclude there’s a more ef- fective way to spend your money.” Keeping It Real Designing an ideal benefits package is one thing. Funding it is another. Health coverage is expensive, and the dollars required to support physical wellness can ham- per ambitions to extend coverage elsewhere. “It’s hard to balance the need for benefits against limited resources,” said Winans. “The cost of healthcare goes up every year, and tends to eat up the rest of the benefits budget. That makes it harder to offer a competitive retirement plan con- tribution rate, or a supplemental mental health program, or

even give people more time off.” When there are budget limitations, Haslam suggests employers look at the programs already in place for un- derutilized perks. “For example, many medical carriers of- fer expended mental health solutions, or programs for tar- get conditions such as weight loss or diabetes,” she said. “And make sure that employees understand everything of- fered in your current programs. Engage in communication all year long, not just at renewal time. And use different methods of communication. These can include written no- tices, videos and audios. Everyone learns differently.” One possible tool for reducing the benefits bill: so- called “voluntary benefits.” In these arrangements, em- ployees can select from a menu of benefits that their em- ployer does not normally offer. While the employee pays 100 percent of the bill, the premiums are reduced because the employer has arranged for a group policy. Among the benefits commonly found in the voluntary mix are insur- ance for life, supplemental disability, and auto and home. “Voluntary benefits allow employees to pick and choose what's important to them,” said Stich. “The person who may not care about accidental death and dismemberment insurance, for example, may want pet insurance.” While voluntary benefits can play a role in the employ- er mix, the fact remains that benefits are expensive and not likely to get any cheaper. Many times, said Winans, the best the employer can do is identify the most egregious gaps, track down the most impactful programs, and bud- get for the greatest payback. “Designing an effective ben- efits package is like playing a game of chess,” said Winans. “Employers need to think strategically about how to invest dollars in the right vehicles.”
