Metsä Board To Modernize Boxboard Machine At Simpele Mill Espoo, Finland based Metsä Board announced it is mod- ernizing the folding boxboard machine at its Simpele mill to improve the quality of folding boxboard and increase production efficiency. The modernization of the board ma- chine is part of a wider investment programme at the mill. Toni Tahvanainen, Vice President at the Simpele mill, says that the modernization will improve the surface qual- ity and printability of the MetsäBoard Classic FBB folding boxboard – both key characteristics when it comes to more challenging end-use segments such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, where quality requirements are constantly tightening. “This investment will help us stay ahead in the tough international competition for premium end-uses,” Tahva- nainen said. The technology for the renewal of the board machine was purchased in June. The installation is scheduled to take place during the mill’s maintenance shutdown in au- tumn 2025. “The shutdown will last about a month, during which we will complete the installation of the new pre-drying and the coating section,” says Tahvanainen. The renewed board machine is expected to be opera- tional by the end of 2025.

Installation at Thysse’s newly constructed, state-of- the-art, 95,000-square-foot facility was completed last summer, and the company said that the iPress is living up to expectations with a quick and seamless integration of Koenig & Bauer’s technology which has helped make the transition a success. The Thysse team says it is impressed with the iPress 106 K PRO’s speed, versatility, efficiency and overall reli- ability with high-speed production delivering exceptional registration, high quality standards, easy handling and fast preparation, saving time and reducing waste. “The addition to our post-press department allows us to meet our clients’ service level agreements (SLAs) with ease due to the efficiency gains,” says Thysse. Thysse says its operators are now able to strip and blank in-line which delivers time, labor, and waste savings. Previously, operators had to perform stripping and blank- ing operations by hand. With the iPress 106K Pro Stripper/ Blanker a full press sheet goes in one end and finished blanks come out the other end. “With over 80 years in the business, we’re proud of our history of embracing innovation and investing in leading edge technologies,” said Thysse. “The addition of the Koe- nig & Bauer iPress 106 K PRO is expanding our opportuni- ties, enabling us to meet tight deadlines, and offer better solutions to our clients.”
