Marathon Monthly May 2018 Physical Therapy
We’d like to wish all of the moms in our Marathon Physical Therapy Family a very Happy Mother’s Day this month. Mother’s Day is the perfect way to celebrate how much these special women mean to us and to let them know just that. I’d personally like to thank my mom, Jinous, for all that she has done for me over the years. She is a strong person whom I look up to and who has taught me to be courageous, independent, and strong willed. Some of you may have met her early in my days as the new owner of Marathon Physical Therapy when she helped me out doing reception work and bookkeeping work. She enjoyed being a part of my new endeavor and meeting all of you. Being a mom over the past 3 years has been the greatest joy (even through the many nights of lost sleep). I feel so lucky to be called mommy by my daughter, Sophia. I have learned that being a mom is one of life’s most divine roles and one that is most fulfilling. Even though sleep is now not a necessity, there are so many other things that make up for it and warm your heart-- a hug for no reason, a sweet smile in the morning, the feel of holding this little hand who depends on you, watching a small version of you grow and flourish into an independent person. These are all life’s little moments to treasure. We hope that all of you moms and grandmothers out there will take a moment to reflect on all that you have done and sacrificed for your children and grandchildren...that goes for the special aunts too! We appreciate it! Please enjoy your Mother’s Day. - Negin

AreYour Feet Causing Your Back Pain?
Print sudoku http://1sudoku.com
When your foot hits the ground, your whole body feels the effect. Imagine in your car if your shock absorbers were worn out. You would feel every bump and jolt from the road. Your feet and legs are much the same way. The greater the impact of your step, the more impact it has on your body. Sometimesour legsarenotquitethesame lengthdueto jointreplacements or arthritic conditions in the ankle, knee, or hip. Even small differences may cause back or leg pain. A small heel lift can often change symptoms dramatically. Many times tightness in the ankle can also contribute to back pain. When the ankle joint is tight, this essentially makes that leg “longer” which can cause the spine to curve slightly and result in back and leg pain. Your feet and legs need to be able to support the rest of your body during walking tasks. We will evaluate your leg and foot strength and mobility and focus on improving the muscles that are weak and stretching those that are tight. This in turn will allow you to walk with better form and help to eliminate back pain. If we find that you need some type of modification to your shoes or inserts we will make those recommendations as well. We want to look at everything that can be contributing to your back pain, not just your back. This can be done under the guidance and expertise of our physical therapists at Marathon Physical Therapy. 3 8 1 3 7 5 4 7 9 2 5 9 1 6 2 4 4 3 3 7 2 7 2 4 3

Common gardening activities, such as digging, planting, weeding, mulching, and raking can cause stress and strain on muscles and joints. This is especially true for senior citizens and people who are normally sedentary. Different body areas such as theshoulders, neck, back, andkneescanbevulnerable to injuryduringgardening. These tips can help prevent injuries: • Warm up before you garden. A 10 minute brisk walk and stretches for the spine and limbs are good ways to warm up. • Change positions frequently to avoid stiffness or cramping. • Make use of a garden cart or wheelbarrow to move heavy planting materials or tools.Be sure to keep your back straight while using a wheelbarrow. • If kneeling on both knees causes discomfort in your back, try kneeling on one and keep theotherfooton theground.Usekneepadsoragardeningpadwhenkneeling. • If kneeling or leaning down to the ground causes significant pain in your back or knees, consider using elevated planters to do your gardening. • Avoid bending your wrist upwards when pulling things or using gardening tools. Instead, keep your wrist straight and use your shoulder muscles to pull and lift. • Endyourgardeningsessionwithsomegentlebackwardbendingofyour lowback, a short walk and light stretching, similar to stretches done before starting.

Why are we so excited about LASER THERAPY?
We’ve Seen It Work!
DEEP TISSUE LASER THERAPY 13550 South Jog Rd, Delray Beach, Fl, 33446
1. It reduces pain and inflammationwithout sideeffects Laser therapy uses a process called photobiomodulation. Unlike medications, laser therapy reduces pain without undesirable side effects. It is also important to point out that patients report long-lasting pain relief. While the number of treatments required may vary depending on the acuity of the condition, many patients experience lasting relief after only a couple treatments. 2. Can be used for acute and chronic conditions When treating acute conditions with laser therapy, it is particularly effective when it is administered as soon as possible following injury. The faster the inflammation is reduced and the healing process can begin, the better. In the case of acute injury, laser therapy helps restore the body to normal function quicker. 3. Treatments can be customized for each situation Depending on the condition, whether it is an acute swollen ankle or chronic low back pain, the therapist will set the laser up for your condition to treat the pain and inflammation along with improving cellular function to maximize the benefits. 4. Treatments Feel Good Depending on the laser, it can create little to no sensation or it can create a gentle, soothing warmth. 5. Treatments Are Fast With LightForce lasers, treatments are quick, usually 5-12 minutes depending on the size, depth, and acuteness of the condition being treated.

IsBedRest GoodFor Your Back?
In the old days, when your back was hurting, your doctor told you to rest until it felt better. However a lot has been learned about proper treatment for back pain since those days, and gone are the days of prolonged bed rest. New studies show that proper movements, posture and a gradual return to activities, has been found to be much more successful to control back pain. This allows you faster pain relief and a return to normal pain-free activities. Bed rest and inactivity have been shown to weaken muscles and bones. Whereas exercise in general, increases strength and flexibility of the muscles, aiding in healing through increased blood flow to the affected area. It has also been found that exercise and aerobic activity, like walking, assists in bringing nutrients to structures in the spine. Some
of these structures, like the discs between your vertebrae, have a poor blood supply and rely on your body’s movements and aerobic activity to circulate nutrients. When a person is inactive, less of these nutrients are able to get to the structures in the spine to keep them healthy. In our Spine Care program, we look at your individual health history as well as your current mobility level and interests. Following a thorough exam, our spine specialists will develop an individualized treatment program specifically for you. We combine our expertise in manual therapy, exercise prescription and patient education to relieve your pain, restore your function and prevent your symptoms from recurring. We want to be your partner in health to guide you back into your previous activity level without pain.
