A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

We have had a very busy week again. It has been lovely to see so many students involving themselves in the different opportunities at the school. To begin I must acknowledge the valiant effort of our Year 8 Cricket team this week. They won the Richmond Cricket Tournament and will now progress to the Middlesex Round of the competition - We are very proud of our team! On Tuesday this week we completed a fun quiz full of interesting facts about Shrove Tuesday, also called Pancake Day. This is a Christian feast day, taking place before the Lent fast starts on Ash Wednesday. Year 8 were asking the question - why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? We also discussed our favourite pancake fillings and much to the delight of Year 8, there were some yummy pancakes with a range of fillings on offer in the school canteen! We have two forms leading the way for epraise this week: 8PUN are in first place with a staggering 1,845 points, closely followed by 8PIR with 1,819 points. Our overall total now stands at 11,703 - well done and keep up the good work everyone! The following students are top of the individual leaderboard for this week: Lana B 8PUN, Mavi T 8PUN with 25, and Laura D 8PUN. Great work! Year 8 are taking part in a competition organised by the Waldegrave eco-committee which involves each form taking care of a plant and decorating a pot. The competition will last until the Easter Break when the plants and pots will be judged to see which forms looked after their plant the best and which forms have decorated their pots in the most creative way. Looking forward to seeing all the amazing plants and decor!

Thank you for all your support and here’s to another busy week at Waldegrave!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Girl of Ink & Stars’ by Kiran Millwood This book is a captivating story about a girl called Isabella, a cartographer’s daughter. She lives on an island called Joya. When her best friend Lupe disappears, Isabella is determined to join the search party by using her mapmaking skills and knowledge of the stars which help guide the search. The world beyond the walls is filled with monsters and ancient myths. Isabella must save not only Lupe but the island too. I enjoyed the character, Isabella, since she was resilient - she never gave up - and brave. I also liked how Isabella’s maps and knowledge transformed into something magical. The more you read the more secrets are revealed. If you liked ‘The Last Bear’ by Hannah Gold or ‘The Wolf Wilder’ by Katherine Rundell, since they also feature brave girls in magical settings, then you would enjoy this book.
