Hard Services Manager CANDIDATE INFORMATION PACK
Dear Candidate,
We are delighted that you are interested in applying for the Hard Services Manager role at Leeds Castle Foundation. Leeds Castle is a 900-year-old estate & a very unusual kind of castle, used throughout her history as a luxurious retreat, rather than for military purposes. As an organisation, we depend entirely on income generated from guests to cover the annual £11 million costs associated with maintaining and preserving the Castle and Estate. We have ambitious plans to increase our revenue through the development of new accommodation, major events, and innovative visitor experiences. This builds upon our recent initiatives to enhance the Castle’s appeal, such as the immersive medieval experience ‘Queens with Means.’ In addition to our growth plans, we are committed to improving our environmental sustainability, promoting biodiversity, and fostering inclusivity and accessibility in all aspects of our work. We possess a wide range of heritage assets, collections, attractions, and estate infrastructure that require significant investment over the next decade. The Hard Services Manager will play a crucial role in planning and executing these initiatives. Moreover, you will be responsible for implementing excellent responsive and pre-planned maintenance programs, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, and maintaining exemplary health and safety standards.

Throughout its history, the estate has been owned by powerful women, including six medieval Queens and its last private owner, Lady Olive Baillie, an Anglo-American heiress. Since 1974, the Leeds Castle Foundation, an independent charity, has owned and managed the estate. Even today, the estate maintains its reputation as a glamorous retreat, offering exceptional hospitality, relaxation, and enjoyment. We welcome approximately 450,000 day visitors and 9,000 school visitors each year, host 150 functions and weddings, and provide luxurious and diverse accommodation options
The Foundation
The aim of the Foundation is ‘the preservation of the Castle, its collections and interiors, and its estate for the benefit of the public.’ To achieve this aim, there is an on-going programme of maintenance and restoration of this magnificent Grade 1 listed Castle requiring expertise, care and of course, money. All profits go towards this aim, the Foundation receiving no external funding to further this good work. Therefore, we are extremely grateful to each and every visitor who contributes by purchasing a ticket or staying here in one of the delightful cottages or other overnight accommodation.
