AUGUST 2019

MAN’S BEST FRIEND DON TURNER’S LIFELONG LOVE FOR DOGS I have always grown up with dogs, and I can’t imagine a point in my life without a dog. I joke that dogs keep my blood pressure down, but no matter how much work a dog can be, I find their company relaxing. A dog won’t argue, point out your mistakes, or turn against you. They just want to be loved and near you. Growing up on a cattle farm, I was surrounded by farm animals, but I also grew up in a family of dog lovers. My dad had a long- haired Chihuahua named Bobo, whom he often set on the mantle to feed him treats. My grandpa was a big rabbit hunter, so he always had beagles. A sheepdog once wandered onto our property, and after we couldn’t find her owner, Lassie became our dog. I even had a boxer named Tiny and an English bulldog named Spike. However, I was devoted to training my bird dogs to help me hunt. Toots and Sue were my two main bird dogs, and they were great partners for hunting down birds, even if they sometimes snatched my prey as a snack. Once, after I had shot down a bird, Sue ran into the brush to find it, but she wouldn’t come out. I kept calling her and calling her, and finally, she popped out of the brush with feathers around her mouth. I never did find the bird. Toots was a smart bird dog. When I was training her, I would find birds and daze them, so they would stay down while we trained. Toots was meticulous, going row by row through the field searching for birds, and even as a puppy, she would point whenever she found one. Today, my dogs do less hunting for birds and more scrounging for treats. My wife and I own miniature schnauzers, who are playful, fun, easygoing, and best of all, don’t shed. We have had

two schnauzers in the past, too. These were Blackjack, who we called BJ for short, and Maggie, who was with our family for 14 wonderful years. She was a gorgeous white schnauzer. We currently have Watson, age 8, and Molly, age 4. Molly is my shadow. That dog will follow me anywhere I go, and at night, she’s cuddled up right next to me. She is smart as a whip and doesn’t even react when we switch to daylight saving time. She knows when her dinner should be every night, and she snatches up her favorite toy and shakes it like crazy at mealtime, lest we forget to feed her. Watson is more stoic. He’s a quiet, calm guy and the surveyor in the house, which is fitting given his name. We named him Watson because his dad was named Holmes, making for a fun play on the classic detective duo. Somehow, it just fit Watson perfectly. The dog-loving gene didn’t end with me, either! My son was a canine officer for years, and he had three German shepherds. Those dogs were just like any member of the family, but they knew that as soon as my son spoke in German, it was time to go to work. Today, he has a dog that’s half-wolf and another dog who is a Great Pyrenees. These animals are a bit more work than the schnauzers in my home, but they’re great additions to his family.

–Don Turner And that’s exactly what you want out of a dog. Finding the right family for a pooch enhances the lives of the family and the dog in many ways, and I feel fortunate enough to have seen this transformation so often in my life.

MEET THE RATS THAT SNIFF OUT LAND MINES HEROISM FROM AN UNEXPECTED SOURCE

When you think

Tanzania-based NGO APOPO found the answer: African giant pouched rats. These rats have several advantages over dogs and humans when it comes to detecting land mines. While they are bigger than your average pet rat — some can be as large as a cat — they’re still light enough that they won’t detonate a land mine if they stand on one. Though they have poor eyesight, they make up for that deficiency with an incredible sense of smell. A fully trained rat can sniff amounts of TNT as small as 29 grams and distinguish it from other industrial substances like motor oil and battery acid. Along with these innate qualities, pouched rats are easy and cheap to train. While a dog can only bond with and work for one master, rats will sniff out land mines under any person’s direction, so long as they get a tasty treat afterward. They can search a 2,000 square foot area in 20 minutes, saving humans from days of dangerous, meticulous work. Between 1995 and 2015, APOPO’s rats found about 13,200 mines in Africa and Southeast Asia. Today, their programs are still going strong, proving that heroism can be found in even the most unlikely of animals.

of animals that could be considered heroic, giant rats probably aren’t the first creatures that pop into your head. Many people still think of them as filthy, disease- ridden little thieves that deserve

eradication rather than a medal. But one nongovernmental organization (NGO) has proven just how heroic rats can be by training them to detect land mines and, in turn, save lives.

Over 60 countries worldwide still feel the effects of wars past every time someone steps on an unactivated land mine. Dogs and metal detectors have traditionally been used to find and safely detonate land mines in these countries, but both methods are costly and time-consuming. A human with a metal detector could take up to four days to clear a 2,000 square foot area of any land mines, and people knew there had to be a faster, safer way.

While summer vacation has been in full swing, the Don Turner Legal Team has been hard at work in our community and in the courtroom. It’s been an active summer between legal meetings and community events, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. This summer in the legal arena, and at the time of writing this, our team obtained substantial settlements for two personal injury cases. This compensation is life-changing for our clients, who were left struggling to pay bills, heal, and move on from debilitating accidents. We have also aided in getting three criminal cases reduced to reckless driving, which allows our clients to keep their licenses and continue to function as contributing members to society. One of our biggest achievements was being able to help a client avoid 10 years in prison over a vehicular homicide charge. Instead, this young, first-time offender will only have to serve 120 days in jail. With no criminal intent or background, this is a substantial shot at a productive future for this client. OUR TEAM STAYS BUSY IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE COURTROOM SUMMER ADVENTURES

of Alpharetta. With an abundance of well-crafted local food on display, we were filled to the brim and excited for this year’s winners! We cannot wait for next year. We also plan to continue our involvement at Alive in Roswell every third Thursday of the month through October. We will continue to hand out prizes, meet the community, and support local businesses and downtown Roswell. Our fearless leader, Don Turner, is staying involved academically. He will be presenting to a motorcycle driving class about getting the right insurance and protecting themselves from underinsured or uninsured motorists. We cannot think of a better community to be involved in and to represent in the courtroom. Follow our community events by liking us on Facebook. If you or a loved one is in need of legal representation, our team can help. Call 770-594-1777 for a free consultation, or visit DonTurnerLegalTeam.com.

Outside the courtroom, our entire team continues to be involved in community engagements and events. Earlier this summer,

The Falcons Are Poised for an Impressive Run in 2019 PRESEASON PREDICTIONS

When the Atlanta Falcons deflated against the New England Patriots in the second half of the 2016 Super Bowl, NFL experts and analysts predicted Matt “Matty Ice” Ryan and company couldn’t get any lower. Instead, the Falcons aimed to fly higher. They took their loss and used it to fuel their impressive campaign during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Despite their resolve, they failed to make the playoffs this past year, falling just one game short due to lackluster protection from their defense. But that was the past, and this season, The Dirty Birds are ready to take the football world by storm. In 2019, the Falcons are projected to be one of the biggest competitors in the NFC. Always confident and cool, quarterback Matt Ryan gained more offensive weapons to take his high-achieving offense even further. The team ranked in the top 10 in the league for points per game, total yards, and pass yards in 2018, and with a newly stacked defense supporting them, the Falcons are poised to excel. The Falcons have been practicing as a team during regular training camps since late July. With the range and depth of their team, we can’t help but be excited for the preseason and

upcoming regular season games. The air around Atlanta already feels powerful and ready for redemption, and we know our birds will fly high.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn can feel it too.

“As a group, they know we’re better all connected together. To get everybody back on the field together, that’s good,” Quinn told reporters earlier this summer. “What I would say right now is we’ve had some excellent practices … I don’t think there’s a lack of belief, and I’d tell you if there was. What I do sense is a sense of ‘we’ve got something to prove,’ and I think that’s not confidence. That’s just wanting to prove it.” At Don Turner Legal Team, we can’t wait to see what our Atlanta Falcons will do this year! We’re cheering right along with you, Atlanta. Let’s go, Falcons

4 TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR BICYCLE

Hopping on your bicycle for a family bike ride through the neighborhood is a great activity for beautiful summer weather, but nothing spoils a fun day of riding more than a flat tire or dislodged chain. That’s why it’s important to keep up with bike maintenance, even if you typically stay close to home. By following these four tips, you and your family can enjoy a smooth ride all summer long. Give your bike a once-over. The best way to avoid any problems with your bike while riding is to inspect it thoroughly before you head out. Check each component and make sure everything is in working order. If you notice your handlebars are loose or your brake pads are worn, you’ll be able to make adjustments or repairs before hopping on. Fill your tires properly. Proper bike tire pressure can seem ambiguous; many people just inflate the tires until they seem plump enough to ride on. But a bike tire will typically have the recommended air pressure in psi (pound-force per square inch) stamped into the side of the tire. For example, your tire might say Min. 85–Max. 135 psi . This may seem like a broad range, but it all depends on what you’re looking for: A higher psi will increase speed, while a lower psi will give you a smoother ride.

Keep it clean. Cleaning your bike regularly is essential in preventing premature wear and tear. When cleaning the body of the bike, use a damp rag with window cleaner or diluted dish soap to wipe it down, and take extra care not to get any of it on the chain. If the chain is dry to the touch, remove any debris that may be caught in it with a small brush or old toothbrush before applying a good bicycle chain lube. Involve your kids. Encouraging your kids to maintain their own bikes will help them understand the importance of taking care of their possessions. Teach them to inspect their bike, clean and lubricate their chains, and regularly check their tire pressure. This summer, set yourself up for cycling success and make bike maintenance a priority.
