CELL GAP CONCERNS DOMINATE MEETING WITH MPS EAP NEWSROOM nouvelles@eap.on.ca
Cellular phone service improvement, rural funding aid in the federal budget, and other concerns headed the list of topics during a meeting between Eastern Ontario MPs and regional com- munity leaders. The Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus (EOWC) and representatives for the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) met, April 18, in Kingston, with all the MPs for Eastern Ontario. The main focus of the meeting for the EOWC and EORN was to update MPs on the need for improving broadband Internet service and mobile phone service as part of the region’s economic development strategy. “On behalf of the EOWC and its partners, I would like to thank our federal MPs for their presence and interest in our region’s growth and development,” stated EOWC Chair Andy Letham, in a press release. “Most of all, we recognize their ongoing commitment to the EOWC’s number-one priority, being the improvement and expansion of the cellular and mobile broadband networks in Eastern Ontario, and we look forward to achieving this goal together in the coming year.” Members of the Eastern Ontario Mayors Caucus (EOMC), representing the largest cities in the region, were also present during the gathering. EOWC and EORN officials noted that the

which means all municipalities will receive this year twice the amount of federal gas tax subsidy as they did last year, and be able to put the extra money towards critical infrastructure projects. Other federal budget announcements, which support regional infrastructure con- cerns, include $1 billion to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to help municipali- ties with energy efficiency projects.
2019 federal budget includes $2.7 billion for expansion of rural and northern broadband service, to ensure rural high-speed Internet service throughout the country by 2030. This dovetails with the EORN project, a joint federal/provincial/regional effort to improve Internet service in Eastern Ontario. EORN is now working on a parallel proj- ect to improve mobile phone service in the region, to eliminate “dead zones” for cell ser- vice. The project, when completed, will both
improve Eastern Ontario’s attractiveness for business investment and also improve public safety by ensuring that emergency service units will be able to receive and respond to 911 cellphone calls from anywhere in Eastern Ontario. EOWC and EOMC officials also praised other sections of the federal budget that will help Eastern Ontario municipalities with their infrastructure needs. That includes a one-time top-up of the federal gas tax fund,
