Tasmanian Hospitality Review: August/September 2025

thriving in this regional town of just 2,000 people. In 2025, more than 60 local artists will exhibit and sell their work across a series of intimate, surprising venues, from backyard sheds and family homes to restaurants, schools and shopfront windows. “This project captures the essence of Queenstown, where experimentation meets extraordinary vision,” says Kronemyer. “It offers a rare glimpse into the everyday creativity of the region, opening up personal spaces and revealing the rich, often hidden, artistic life of the West Coast.” Many of the festival’s ambitious commissions are developed through long-term collaborations with the West Coast community. In the West, time moves differently, and the development of the festival follows suit with its approach to seeding future artistic presentations. Eighty percent of the program is offered free of charge, thanks to the support of generous partners, funders, and donors. The festival reaches a fever pitch on Sunday afternoon with its grand finale: The Unconformity Cup. Held on Queenstown’s infamous and unforgiving gravel oval, this is grassroots footy without the grass – a gladiatorial showdown where artists take on locals, the West takes on the rest and teams battle the elements as much as each other. Knees bleed. Gravel rash is a badge of honour. And sporting history is made.

“It’s the highest match attendance of the year for the Queenstown Crows,” says Kronemyer. “In 2023, the visiting side triumphed – making 2025 the ultimate grudge match. The West is hungry to win back the Cup.”

For those in the know, The Unconformity is a rare pilgrimage – a festival that only happens every two years, and one that’s well worth the journey. Queenstown’s accommodation books out early, with regulars securing their stay months in advance, but neighbouring towns offer excellent options to extend your trip, explore the region, and take your time.
