Reflecting on 180 Years of Bowls

AO, further cementing the importance of the milestone within the state and national sporting calendar. As bowls celebrates its 180th year in Australia, the message is clear: while the history of the sport is rich and enduring, its future is equally exciting.

In late July the Australian bowls community gathered in Sandy Bay – the birthplace of the sport in this country – to mark an extraordinary milestone: 180 years since the first recorded game of bowls was played in Australia. Held at the historic Sandy Bay Bowls Club, the celebration honoured the long-standing legacy of the sport, which began just a stone’s throw away, behind the Beach Tavern in 1845 and has since grown into a beloved pastime for Australians of all ages. The community event, which welcomed community members, paid tribute to generations of players, volunteers and administrators who have shaped the game over nearly two centuries.

Clubs Tasmania recently hit the road to visit some of our fantastic community clubs along the beautiful East Coast. From charming seaside towns to tight- knit rural communities, it was a pleasure to meet with club members, hear their stories, and see first- hand the passion that drives their local sporting and community hubs. Each club visit was a reminder of the vital role these organisations play in the heart of regional Tasmania.
