she had an experience that illustrated the need for safe, reliable drivers, and she knew it was something she could do. She thought, “How are all these people getting around?” and called PCOA to see if they knew anyone offering this service. PCOA directed her to ENVP, and she has volunteered ever since. Jane enjoys meeting clients, who often tell her, “I don’t know what I would do without you all.” She knows they really mean it.
stories!” Regarding the driving, Joann observes, “Tucson is really not set up for people without cars, so being able to help someone stay in their own home by helping is really an important thing to do.” The volunteers stress that the organization is very flexible with their schedules. If an emergency comes up, or you go on vacation or get sick, they can work with you. Greta Orris, who helps in the office, drives, and is also a board member, says, “I like a little bit of structure, so I work the same shift every week. But I’m also able to help drive when it works with my schedule.” Some volunteers who work behind the scenes are a vital part of our organization. One in particular, is Jean Butler. She works on the welcome letters to new clients and compiles the figures for our monthly reports. She works tirelessly and comes in several days a week. She came on board around 2009. She’s also a great resource for how things work around the office. To all our wonderful volunteers, we thank you for your dedication and continued service. We could not serve our clients without you! We hope everyone has a healthy and happy new year. Please think of us if you’re looking to volunteer and give back! ENVP does not charge for services, as the majority of clients are on a very limited income. The clients appreciate us because we’re dependable, trustworthy, and friendly. Volunteers go through a background check so there's no need for clients to worry about our drivers. Volunteering for ENVP is fun and rewarding. Take it from some of our current volunteers!
It is difficult for ENVP to fill all the requested rides with drivers. As Linda Lagen, who volunteers in the office, says, “One of the hardest things is that we sometimes have to stop taking new clients. I feel badly when I have to turn people away. I always feel like every client has such a need for us, and they’re always telling me how grateful they are and blessing me.” Joann Vickroy, has provided transportation and office help. When asked what she likes best, she says, “I like talking to the clients. Sometimes they’re isolated in their homes, so they really enjoy the company while we drive. They have such interesting and funny Pictured left to right: ENVP volunteers, Jane Decker, Joann Vickroy, Linda Lagen, and Greta Orris.
