ing this direction. Rely on this mar velous, wonderful Counsellor! The next phrase is “The mighty God." We seldom even begin to understand the mystery of the Trin ity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Here is one God, eternally manifested in three persons, the same in sub stance and equal in power and glory. How could it be that this Holy One should be born of the virgin Mary? The finite mind cannot begin to comprehend the truth which is infinite in its scope. Jesus rightly testified, "He that hath seen me, hath seen the Father." The mighty God subjected Himself to the sinless frailities of human flesh when He was down here upon the earth. He is able to save unto the uttermost. The Son is also called "The Ever lasting Father." This means that He is the provider for all. He has a fatherly care and a sustaining in terest in His own for all eternity. We know that the Lord Jesus Christ has always sustained a fatherly re lationship to all believers (Isaiah 53:10, Hebrews 2:11-13). The final title is "The Prince of Peace." Apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, the world knows absolutely nothing of peace. Instead there is hatred, envy, war, bloodshed, and death. The Saviour has come to give peace to the hearts of man. It is His right to rule. He will come to set up a millennial reign for one thousand years of peace. His leg acy before going away was peace. He promises, "My peace I give un to you. Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." "He was born in the meanest of circumstances but the air above

was filled with hallelujahs of the heavenly host. His lodging was a cattle bin, but the star drew dis tinguished visitors from afar to do him homage. His birth was con trary to the laws of life. His death was contrary to the laws of death. No oracle is so like his life and teaching. He had no cornfields or fisheries, but he could set a table for 5,000 and have bread and fish to spare. He walked on no beauti ful carpet, but He walked on the waters and they supported Him. His crucifixion was the cruelest of all crimes, but on God's side, no lower price than His infinite agony could have made possible our re demption. When He died, few men mourned, but a black crepe was hung over the sun. Though men troubled not for their sins, the earth beneath shook under the load. All nature honored Him. Sin never touched Him. Corruption could not get hold of His body. The soil that had been reddened with His blood could not claim His dust. Three years He preached His Gospel. He wrote no book, built no church, but after 1900 years He is the central character of all human history. The perpetual theme of all preaching, the pivot around which the events of the ages revolve. He is the only re demption of the human race, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Saviour of the world." Q. "/ have heard many definitions of the word, "Jesus Christ," but what do they really mean?" A. The names are very precious to every believer. As the Song of Sol omon indicates, it is like an oint ment poured forth in the believer's ear. Jesus, in a certain sense, em phasizes His humanity (Matthew Page 25
