contemporary. Yet He was not "way out"; His vocabulary and il­ lustrations were simple, familiar and down-to-earth. What was His secret? His work was original because it was the work of the Originator, the Father, in Him. "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works (John 14:10). He did not have to be different for the sake of being different. He was available to the Father to be Himself in Him, and so His work was unique.

Why is it that we Christians have a reputation for dull, drab, unim­ aginative conformity? Why is it assumed that because a project is Christian it will be totally devoid of originality? Such an assumption we find unpalatable but all too of­ ten it is true. There can be only one reason: if Christian work is not original it is not Christian! When Jesus Christ led an out­ reach in His home town "the many listeners were astonished, saying, 'Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by his hands?'" (Mark 6:2b). His ministry and His work were always fresh, new and
